The Atlanta metro is a sea of incorporated islands (cities like Smyrna, Marietta, etc.) surrounded by a sea of unincorporated territory, and while many of those unincorporated areas have local names (Vinings, Mableton, etc.), there isn't really anything "formal" in place to attach the name to, at least in most cases.

The whole area is all homogeneous suburb, really, and you can't tell incorporated areas from unincorporated for the most part unless you look at someone's property taxes.
I know what you mean. I have a nephew who lives in the Atlanta burbs. He'll tell you he lives in "unincorporated Decatur", not Decatur which apparently is a different school district.

Yes, Mahtomedi is horrible to explain to people on the phone.

Whole Edina disupute thing is really quite simple. Not too many places are they doing home knockdowns and rebuilding newer and often larger homes. I can see both sides of the argument. This is also happening in Fulton, but you don't hear complaints. I think City of Edina needs to get on the stick with zoning and such to avoid these from being an ongoing problem.

What you see happening in Edina, will become more popular in other areas in the future. I hope all the people calling the people in Edina big whiners remember this when the situation gets a little closer to home.

If your Pavlovian response to the words south Minneapolis is Lake and Portland, you need to leave Edina more often. Plus, while it may be a rough area, at least the good people of Phillips have better things to worry about than the 2 foot encroachment of construction projects.
Snobbery and ignorance doesn't become you.

The last time I checked, bigger houses in the neighborhood increases property values. As long as city ordinances are being followed, I have no problem with my neighbors increasing the value of my property.
