I agree that Linden Hills is an expensive neighborhood. The other younger, middle class families I was referring to have purchased more recently, and in neighborhoods like Kenny and Armitage. I don't always know how they afford it, but they're certainly not wealthy.

I guess I don't think of a Southwest address (except in Linden Hills, or otherwise right on the creek or some of the streets ringing Lake Harriet) as a status symbol. Maybe it's all relative, and it's because I grew up near there. (my "status symbol" areas would be Mount Curve or Kenwood, not a boring-but-safe neighborhood like Windom) But yes, I 'm sure some people may see it as a status thing, and someone who was into status would have "upper crust attitude." I guess I just don't see it as a common thing. I'm okay with disagreeing and realizing I'm not going to change anyone's opinion, but I do appreciate the clarification.

I love the reaction I get from them when they ask me where in Minneapolis I live and I explain that I'm in Powderhorn over by South High School and Matt's Bar. Usually they reply with "Oh...." as if they cross over to the east side of the freeway and step straight into hell or something. I usually get weird looks from neighbors when I drive around there, like they're a moment away from calling the cops or crime prevention specialist on me because they see a dented pre-2006 domestic car driving down their street.

Recently a doctor from the Kenwood area telling my wife it wasn't safe to take the light rail and to get on a bus on intersections like Franklin and Bloomington, Chicago and Lake, Cedar and Lake, etc. at any time. This is a guy who has never taken public transportation before in his life and the only time he is on my side of town is to go to the YWCA. That's the kind of ignorance that plagues the population from that part of the city. No matter where you go, wealthy people seem to be in their own world.

FYI Slig, I live in Linden Hills and drive a 1992 Honda (no real dents, but a decent amount of rust). No cops have yet been called on me.
People seem to love to accuse Linden Hills folks of being snotty. I'm sure there are some (cause I have met some myself), but there are also many folks who actually enjoy getting to know the entire city. Plus Linden Hills is an awesome neighborhood, so that's why it gets mentioned frequently, along with Uptown, Mac-Groveland, and St Anthony Park and other "upper-crust areas"

I also buy Swedish Sausage at Ingebritssens, buy flowers at Chicago-Lake Florist, Cubanos at Manny's Tortas and occasionally buy beer at Chicago-Lake Liquor. Many of my friends also like to bike down the greenway and stop at the Global Marketplace.

Linden Hills lives up to that reputation to an extent but I agree that there are neighborhoods that better fit the generalization, namely Kenwood and Cedar-Isles-Dean in the Calhoun Isles area and Lynnhurst, Fulton, and Tangletown in SW.
