If I had to live in a burb and it had to be <10 miles from downtown Mpls, that's the one I'd pick, too.

I'd pick Richfield, although I see nothing wrong with the SLP pick.

You have many options to choose from. We arrived in here in August of last summer and hope to purchase a home in the Eden Prairie area this summer (or possibly Chanhassen). So far I can honestly say that we are really, really liking Minneapolis. I can understand why someone in their 20s whose intention is to live the fun life might prefer a larger city like Chicago or L.A., but we want to settle down and have a family - this is the perfect place for us

Robbinsdale just built a new apartment complex, they look really nice, although I haven't seen the insides yet.
Robbinsdale has a small town feel, not too much to do for entertainment in the city itself, but is close to downtown for the excitment.

Shoot- I just drove by this yesterday (if it's the same one- guess I couldn't tell if it was an apt building or sort of upscale condos, but they looked nice). Robbinsdale did have a need for some nicer apartment buildings. Though seemingly well-maintained, all of the other apts i've seen there have looked pretty ugly, on the outside at least as I haven't been inside any- the typical 60s-70s built stuff. The exception I guess would be the ones backing Crystal Lake off of 81 (assuming they're also apts and not condos). I was also surprised to see some luxury apts built on a lake somewhere in Brooklyn Center as well- not sure exactly where at as I just saw an ad on craig's list for them, but they looked really nice- and kind of expensive.

My vote is Edina (I've had a home here for 15 years and absolutely zero crime of any kind). There are numerous grocery stores, shopping, misc... I would look up apartments.com or any other rental Web site. Any apartment complex in Edina would be safe. St Louis Park is nearby and is also good.
