Edina is pretty solid. Good shops and restaurants, close to downtown.

With that description you can live pretty much anywhere. What type of amenities would you like? Do you like to walk to stores, walk for scenery? Want lots of land or just a patch? Old or new building? Price range? You'll get much better recommendations with some details.

Living within 10 miles from downtown limits your possibilities to:

-New Brighton
-Falcon Heights
-Lauderdale
-Edina
-St. Louis Park
-Roseville
-Bloomington
-Richfield
-Brooklyn Center
-St. Anthony
-Columbia Heights
-Golden Valley
-Robbinsdale
-Hilltop

There are quiet areas in most of these suburbs. I think it would more depend on the actual neighborhood and apartment complex you choose than anything else. The only one I'd write off the list without further thought is Hilltop because it's basically a trailer park.

St Louis Park has some newer apartment complexes and it's very close to downtown. I think that would be a good place for you to start.

If you take my list of suburbs and the city-data crime index from 2005 it will result in the following (the lower the number the lower the crime):

Edina 122.6
New Brighton 164.2
St. Louis Park 232.8
St. Anthony 243.1
Golden Valley 245.1
Bloomington 251.8 (2004 data)
Roseville 271.7
Robbinsdale 302.7
Richfield 347.4
Columbia Heights 509.9
Brooklyn Center 513.8
Hilltop N/A
Falcon Heights N/A
Lauderdale N/A

I have no idea how Falcon heights and Lauderdale would rate on this but I'm almost positive Hilltop's index is higher than Brooklyn Center's.

OK, fair enough. You did more research than me. I just looked at an expedia map and measured a ten mile line from downtown Mpls to the edges of those burbs.
