Default Shakopee

Could I get some opinions on Shakopee regarding elementry through high schools, neighborhoods, community feel, etc. from people who have children or lots of experience in this area?
Thanks for your help.

Can't give ya any experiences with the school system as I have no kids but the town in general is small town close to the city. Decent amount of shopping for Needs - Not so many for wants. But it is a very short drive into Edina, Burnsville, or Bloomington if you want Mall shopping - around 15-20 minutes to any of those locations. I work in Shakopee and live in Chaska most the people my wife and myself encounter seem to be kind of small townish - friendly trusting - no real crime that im aware of at all. Maybe the occasional drunken idiot that does something but not like any gang activity or anything like that. If you like Small Town living but want to live close to the city and the amenities it provides I'd say its a good thing. If you need to be in the center of all Activities youd definitely be better off to live closer to town.

If you do like small town atmosphere thats real affordable and safe other areas i would look at in that general part of town are: Savage, Prior Lake, Chaska.

With the new 212 going thru chaska to 494 you can literally get into the city in 15-20 minutes even though it seems far out its not nearly as far as most people seem to think it is and in 2008 was Voted the #8 city to live in for the U.S. Always lots of activities going on little town festivals, events etc, I've liked it here very much myself. Boring but nice and pleasant people here overall I'd say

I need some help understanding the post above. I do not see "new 212" on Google Maps. I do see MN-312. I also see Chaska as being about 26 miles from downtown Minneapolis, so that's why I'm puzzled over the 15-20 minutes referred to above. Unless "literally get into the city" means "literally get just over the western edge of the city" I don't see how it's possible. I'd love to be wrong, though, as Chaska looks like a lovely place to live.

US212 used to be Flying Cloud Drive, but it was a pretty dangerous two-lane road. They started construction on the 212 freeway and tentatively called it 312 because 212 was still in use to describe Flying Cloud Drive. Flying Cloud was stripped of its 212 designation upon completion of 312. So...in short, 312 is 212.

Traffic to downtown from that area will be foobar for a couple years while the 62 crosstown is under construction. Before the construction started, you would have been looking at 45-60 minutes during rush hour. Might be better after they are done with the seperation of crosstown and 35W.

The road has been open for less then a year so it might not be showing up on Google. The speed limit on the roads into the city is 65 MPH, which means everyone drives 70 or so .

Shakopee is ok. There seems to be issues that crop up there from time to time that make the news. Most people I know that have lived there say the same thing, it ok. Chaska would be a better option, especially for schools, the Shakopee. Again, the schools are ok, not great, Chaska is just better.

My BIL/SIL live there. They like it well enough, although the commute is a pain for them. They feel safe and they have a neighborhood with a lot of kids. One of their girls needed a gifted program and they open enrolled her into Minnetonka because Shakopee just couldn't meet her needs. They feel the schools are OK but nothing special.

sorry for the delayed response but the 15-20 minutes was for travel times to the specific shopping areas i was referring to, but downtown is about 30 - 40 minutes if you dont hit too much traffic. Although to be honest Downtown in my experience tends to be much more about restaurants, bars and entertainment then it is for shopping. There definitely is some shopping to be had downtown but not as easily accesible as at the malls in the burbs that I had previously listed in prior post.
