The sculpture garen should be looking pretty good. Nice area for some skyline shots. Not sure if they will have the cherry back on the spoon bridge by they or not. This is a Minneapolis icon.
A bit early for the rose garden, but if you are near Calhoun it is worth a peek. Peace garden is there too. Como Park in St. Paul and Wirth Park are also very nice.

Last night I happened to drive by another art museum that should be on your list: The Museum of Russian Art. Located in a former church on 54th Street just east of Nicollet Avenue (adjacent to I-35W), this museum has a great collection of pre-Soviet and Soviet era art. I was there about 4 months ago and found it well worth a visit. Here's their website:

Speaking of freeways and roads: be prepared for lots of road construction! About a third of downtown streets are ripped up for a new double bus lane (actually just Marquette and 2nd Avenue, but it seems like more). Plus I-35W is also under major reconstruction between DT and I-494

Fantastic! Thank you all for the great recommendations!
What happened to the cherry on the spoon? I saw it on a quick trip about 10 years ago when I was last in the city.

Here's another event that might be of interest: The Lyn Lake "Rites of Spring" street festival is taking place on Sunday, May 17; there will be live music, a Syttende Mai celebration (that's the Norwegian Independence day - how very Minnesotan!), and tons of food from local restaurants. Lyn-Lake is the intersection of Lyndale and Lake, and is sort of in-between the Eat Street area of Whittier and the core of Uptown. It's a busy commercial district, and the festival looks like it should be fun.

If you want to try and really good and inexpensive Vietnamese restaurant near uptown, go to Quang on 28th and Nicollet Ave. You won't be disappointed.

Rent a bicycle at least one day.
Then do the Grand Rounds: It is the best way to see all that you want - neighborhoods, nature, people watching, etc.... I never tire of it. Basically you bike up and down the Mississippi River going by and through great neighborhoods and areas like: Fort Snelling, Minnehaha Park, Highland Park, Longfellow; and where you can go around Lake Harriet and Calhoun and go into Uptown and even downtown. Let me know if you want more specific info, but biking in the cities in the summer is the best....

What a great thread! My husband and I will be visiting MSP for 5 days at the start of August from Melbourne, Australia, and we're so looking forward to exploring your city! Besides the historical sites, galleries, and museums -- we love walking around neighbourhoods and really getting a feel for the city. We also enjoy good coffee/cafes, independent bookstores, fresh food/organic markets and parks and gardens. We'll be staying in the Lowry Hill neighbourhood (no car), but we hope to explore neighbourhoods in St. Paul too. We're not excatly what you'd call touristy tourists so we enjoy throwing in some obscure sites that only the natives know and love. Any additional suggestions, websites or blogs would be most welcome!
