Save this old Shakopee house
A Joni Mitchell song springs to mind after reading this. Does Shakopee really need a parking ramp that badly???
Historic Shakopee home is free, if you can move it

The demand for plentiful (and often free) parking is a major problem in America. I don't know the whole story, though - why does this ramp need to be built, and why in this particular spot?
I have a real sore spot about parking. The system is set up with the assumption that everyone drives everywhere. Everyone - drivers and nondrivers alike - end up paying the cost. Crazy zoning laws, sprawling parking lots, difficulties for small businesses, etc. - it's a terrible system.
I hope someone out there is able to save the house; it would be a real loss to Shakopee to have a remnant of their early past ripped down just for the sake of a parking ramp of all things.

I just did a little mental math. If the city moved the damn thing itself and put it along the river, it could fetch upwards of a million dollars for an investment of less than half of that. They would rather demolish it while waiting for a private buyer?
Most parking ramp spaces cost around $15,000 each to build. There's 50 more parking spots right there for oversized Yukons that they could squeeze into downtown. Anyone here want to pitch in with me? Maybe we could even use the profits for something prudent.

If they were referring to the one last house left in downtown Minneapolis it would've made more sense to me. The fact that it's in Shakopee is what throws me off. You're trying to tell me that the only available space in the vicinity happens to be where this home is located? Come on, the whole damn city is a cornfield with a random clump of town houses here and a casino over there. Shakopee has so much open space it's an eyesore.
