Perhaps there is some jealousy, but I usually think it is a reaction to rudeness. To me, it's like OK you have lots of money, but jeez, be considerate and stop showing it off to everyone else, get some manners. Technically it wasn't the school giving out the cars, it was the after graduation party committee. We were just lucky to live in an area that was pretty affluent and we got a lot of nice donations. This was also LONG before everyone and their brother did fundraisers for everything and businesses got hit up every other day for donations.
