Hi all
Thanks for the replies.
I am from - drum roll please - South Africa.
That means I'm coming from somewhere where 20C is cold - MSP should be fun
If anyone has an opinion on:
Wayzata Woods Apartments - 240 Central Ave N. Wayzata, MN 55391
Plymouth Oaks Apartments - 3301 Highway 169 N. Plymouth, MN 55441
Plymouth Pointe Apartments - 9630 37th Pl. N Plymouth, MN 55441
that would be appreciated - right now I'm just going by the pictures.

Heh. Wow, we'll even hit -10C here in the Atlanta metro on a few nights during the year. The Twin Cities should be an adventure for you.
It really isn't that bad. You might even learn to enjoy the crisp night air. I know I did, and I miss it at times...
(Admittedly less than I used to, tho...)

Hi all
Thanks for all the input for this topic - I got lucky and a work colleague offered to put me and the family up for a couple of months so we can explore/find the right area.
Who knows, may meet some of the people from this forum even if we don't know each other when we do

Plymouth Pointe Apartments, but you should move to Brooklyn Park with a large African population and good safety or East Bloomington with diversity, easy affordable living close to the light rail train and close to the biggest mall in America soon the world

So Joe, are you saying that because I'm from South Africa I must be black, and because I'm black I should live in an African area?
sigh, and I thought I was leaving stereotypes behind, guess not.
Looking forward to meeting everyone (though possibly not Joe) - or am I misunderstanding you Joe, in which case I owe you an apology.

Paul- I went the other way and stereotyped you as being Afrikaner or Anglo-African, not sure why- likely due to the media reports about the high numbers of white South Africans steadily leaving the country (of course, I also read that South Africa is experiencing a lot of "brain drain" amongst many of its black South Africans graduating with technical/ college/ graduate degrees).
Regardless/ whatever the case (of which is not my business nor anyone else's), I'm not sure what Joe was implying with his comments and I view his comments as highly unorthodox- not sure if he was thinking that you would feel like you 'fit in' better (many persons come on these boards asking where they could find 'others' in Minnesota more like them) or if he was "steering" you to an area, albeit it should be noted that Brooklyn Park is a nice suburb that is fairly diverse but more white in its composition than anything- there are many more 'african immigrants' in Minneapolis itself and getting to be a fair amount in St. Paul as well. And unfortunately, you will never leave stereotypes behind wherever you go- Minneapolis/ St. Paul area is no exception (although I have liked things better here than most other areas of the US that I've lived).

Well, the winter sucks but at least you have the holidays to distract you so it really doesn't emotionally sink in most years until January - especially when you have children; then its hard going for January & February as you find yourself making involuntary faces when you step outside. The bitter cold is gone by late February, and the big snow dumps are usually gone by early April.
May through October are what make the state worth living in. Its almost like living in "the Shire" its so awesomely pleasant.
Oh, and make sure wherever you end up, to have a garage or indoor parking.
