You will not experience violent crime in most of the suburban areas of the Twin Cities. There are a few areas in Minneapolis and St. Paul where violent crime is a common occurrence but just driving through most of those areas will clue you into that.

I think "common occurrence" is overstating it, but I agree that in general in the Twin Cities as a whole you are unlikely to encounter much violent crime. The City of Minneapolis has a lot of information available on their website - shots fired maps, precinct data, etc., that may be of interest. I've contacted the police a couple of times with various questions in the past and have always been impressed with how quickly they respond. Also, most (all?) Minneapolis neighborhoods have their annual neighborhood policing plans available on the website; they're pretty short documents packed with quick-to-read statistics and details about what the community thinks are the top priorities (which don't necessarily always line up with what crimes are actually most common). Each year's plan also includes an evaluation of the previous year's goals and progress. Some neighborhood plans are better or more extensive than others, but they're a good place to start.

St Mary's campus in Mpls is on the South Side, by 26th & Park Ave. One of my personal favorite neighborhoods for relatively low cost housing along with low crime and great community feel is Longfellow, just 2 or 3 miles east of St Mary's campus. Also, you might want to look at the suburb of Richfield, which is maybe 4 miles or so directly south of St Mary's. Lots of affordable homes there. Used to be considered safe to the point of boring, but not sure how it is now.

There is nothing wrong with Ramsey schools. Overall they are probably equally as good as Mounds View schools.

Richfield's pretty safe for the most part. There's occasionally some riff-raff around the Hub at 66th and Nicollet, but they're mostly just punk kids waiting for the bus to get to Southdale or MOA. There are a few problem apartment buildings, but if you're not living in them or right next door, it's not a big concern.

My parents live in Richfield, and I'll occasionally house-sit for them. I have no problem walking around the area late at night.
