Earlier this year, Mayor Rybak proposed to cut the entire Complaint Investigation Unit of the City of Minneapolis Civil Rights Department. This unit investigates and processes complaints of discrimination which take place in Minneapolis. The Civil Rights Department uses approximately 1% of the entire city budget.

FIX YOUR TEXT. Its not coming out legible.

The good about this = The department was a shame in the first place, from my knowledge. The complains never were addressed and the board had no actual authority over police abuse and discriminations. The fact that the city keeps having to pay out the back end for police abuse/or city departmental discrimination suits shows that.

The bad = There still is nothing to replace it with. It would be far cheaper to actually create a 'responsibility' requirement for all city workers that in the case of discrimination or abuse, each individual is personally liable and subject to instant dismissal, instead of granting them paid vacations while the tax payers foot the lawsuit/awarding/settlement bill.

Maybe that really says it all.

Isn't this being closed because it overlaps with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights? I have read that the Minnesota Department of Human Rights already investigates all reports made to that city department anyway.

To be honest, I am not sure. Does the MDHS have any actual say of worker accountability and civil liability in civil rights cases?

If the Minnesota Department of Human Rights already handles these cases effectively, then this is an over-hyped and frankly unnecessary story and not even close to being controversial.
