Anybody that has been to Duluth knows that its paper, the Duluth News Tribune, has become decadent. I mean, it really sucks. I was wondering what you guys perfer, Star or Pioneer Press? Or do you get other newspapers like the New York Times? We have become so frustrated that we will be moving to another paper.

I live in Saint Paul and will NOT read the Pioneer Press. No news! Prefer the Star.

( I will only speak about the Sunday paper)

My folks got the St Cloud Daily Times when I was a kid in rural MN , but since (( at that time ) they had no Sunday paper, we got the Mpls paper.

The Tribune ( same as Star today) went on a few month strike so we got the Pioneer Press.

We couldn't wait for the strike to end.

Today, I still buy the Tribune every Sunday and never would consider the Times or Pioneer Press.
Last month, at a convenience store, a woman noticed me buying the MPLS paper and pointed to the price difference between the MPLS and St Paul paper------Pioneer Press is cheaper. The next Sunday I bought it and only ONCE.

MPLS paper is much better and well worth the higher price.

In defense of the Duluth and St Cloud paper----------they do cover local/regional news, sports, and weather.

After all my rambling, I would rate the MPLS paper over the St Paul ( Sunday and daily )

No, but they're always trying to give you a deal even though they've given up on me.

I had dinner with an editor at the Strib a couple weeks back and asked him if he thought the Twin Cities would be able to sustain two major newspapers much longer, he said no. I didn't follow up with which newspaper would be going by the wayside, the answer to that question is obvious. The Pioneer Press is as good as dead.

The Star Tribune's quality has gone way down in recent years. Its national news coverage is pretty lightweight or is AP stuff I've already read elsewhere. For me, the scant decent local coverage and local columnists no longer make it worth the cost or even the hassles of recycling). Unfortunately that's a fate facing newspapers nation-wide, though, and the Strib like the others has had to make cuts. My parents recently let their subscription lapse after 30 years. If you're in Duluth and not the Twin Cities anyway I'd go with a paper with more substance - I'd go with the New York Times, plus maybe the locals on Sundays, and scan the papers online or buy on the stand as needed to get coverage of larger local or state issues.

I fear it will be the Star that will go down based on rumors. Unless we pay bucks at Barnes and Noble or Schindlers for the New York Times or its like, we will be news-starved.

For local news I normally use the Star Tribune website. When it comes to newspapers I prefer Star Tribune and USA Today.
