Default Minnesota mosquitoes.

If mosquitoes only come out at night and the sun sets so late during the summer should it still be a problem for kids if there in the house by 9pm?

They tend to come out at dusk and are most active for about 30 minutes or perhaps an hour. It should not be much of an issue in the metro. This year is very dry and bugs are pretty much a complete non issue.

Also, dusk varies. In mid june it is around 10:00, right now it is around 9:00. By labor day it will be about 8:00. I rounded the times a bit, but that should give an idea.

They're most active around dusk, but they can get you anytime. They prefer shaded areas, long grass, etc. We've had wet periods where they're so thick they will come out mid day in bright sunlight. But as Clifford said, it's been dry this year and they haven't been much of a problem.
Use a repellant anyway. West Nile has been an issue in recent years. Not so much in the metro area, buy why take a chance?

Sounds like a reasonable question.
If I were going to Phoenix, I would ask about scorpions and black widows.

OP mosquitoes are not that big of an issuse put a little OFF on your kids and they will be fine. The real thing that you have to worry about is the man eatting bears and the roving bands of anti-semitic africian american gypsies.
I think there was some previous comment to the effect that you can't even go outside because the bugs are so bad. If I was not from here and somebody said that, it would probably make me cautious too. I cut the guy some slack based on previous answers that I found to be based on the extreme worse case which is very rare in the metro.

A little mild power bug spray a few times a year is probably all most people use. Good advice. You can get 100% deet, don't do that. It is overkill and not good for your skin. This is for hardcore deep woods type of situation not your back yard that has a few bugs upon occasion.

Some are also early risers. I got nailed pretty badly during the day at the State Fair one year.

Dawn and dusk are the worst times for mosquitoes but they are NOT bad this year. I got my first mosquito bites of the summer yesterday, 2 of them. It was about 8:00, just finishing 9 holes of golf. In a summer where we have normal precipitation, yes, you need to wear bug spray in the evening but you certainly don't have stay inside.

I agree that they are not bad this year. Also where I live there is this chopper that flys around and sprays for them. In general, southern states have more aggressive mosquito populations than we do.
