Camden brings up some good points. Before I purchased a home I lived most of my life in several different suburbs in the Twin Cities area, (Blaine, Coon Rapids, Ramsey, Eagan) and decided I wanted to try something new. Now I've been living in Minneapolis for a year and a half and I think buying there was one of the best decisions I've made. Coincidentally, several of my neighbors are social workers who also work in the city.

Thanks everyone. She has been looking around and likes plymouth since it is close to uptown, but has nice parks and stuff since we are pretty out doorsey too. Any one have a guess at commute times to White bear from plymouth? I have been gone for a while, hows construction heading that way/back?

Plymouth is nowhere near Uptown. I'm not sure how long the drive would take on a regular day, but even at night or on holidays (the times when I've mostly been back and forth between Uptown and Plymouth) it takes a long time. Sorry, can't help you on the White Bear-Plymouth commute.

If I'm not mistaken the majority of the commute would be using the 494/694 loop. If you're driving during rush hour you can expect moderate to heavy traffic on that stretch.

Unfortunately, where you go to school in White Bear Lake and where your girlfriend's sister works in Eden Prairie are on opposite ends of the metro area.

Centrally located Minneapolis or St. Paul would be good options for your girlfriend of course. But if you want to stay suburban, check out South St. Paul, Woodbury or Mendota Heights. That would make for a tolerable 20-30 minute commute along 494/694.

If you want to take into account your plans for attending the U of M in the near future, St. Louis Park or Richfield would be better options. But until you transfer schools, it would be a long ride to White Bear Lake.

By the way, I don't know of many apartments that allow dogs. That might be a dealbreaker for your girlfriend's sister.
