The population of Oakland is about 400,000 while the population of the TC metro area is what, 2 million? Quite the contrast.

Wikipedia claims Oakland proper has a population of 420,183 (2006 est), while the Twin Cities metro is somewhere around 3,175,041 (MSA) or 3,502,891 (CSA).

If you are comparing Oakland proper to Minneapolis proper I would think the populations are very similar.

What? Did you even see what I posted? I showed the number of murders in both Minneapolis and Oakland, which are fairly close in population. I also showed the total number of murders for the entire Twin Cities metropolitan area (~3.2 million) to show that the Twin Cities area (including Minneapolis) is not on the same level as Oakland.
Again:
Minneapolis: 20 (as of July 17th)
Oakland: 69 (as of July 14th)
Twin Cities metro area: 42 (as of July 18th)

When using city census estimates, go with those released by the Metropolitan Council as their numbers have proven to be more accurate. For example, the US Census Bureau estimated Minneapolis at 353,000 shortly before the official 2000 census. The actual population turned out to be 382,000. Anyway, according to the Met. Council, their latest estimate for Minneapolis is at 388,020.

By the way, I'm sticking with those original crime stat numbers from back then. That's what came off city data at the time. Granted, Oakland is seeing many more murders of late than Minneapolis, but my comparison was with the overall crime index.
I'm hoping that my beloved Minneapolis has turned the corner. I'll be arriving from California next month to visit my old Uptown neighborhood. It takes someone to leave town for awhile to make an objective observation about trends in the neighborhoods. I'll do that for you guys and report back with my "man on the street" findings! I'm sure you can hardly wait.
Now let this thread go back into obscurity. The Twin Cities has a GOP Convention coming to town. Lets put on a happy face.

It really bugs me sometimes when some old thread is resurrected after a year. Especially when it isn't pertinent to start with! Is there any way to close some of these when they are a certain age?
Can an OP close a thread or is it only the moderators who can close threads?

I was simply doing quick searches at a centralized source to fill in the thread. Wikipedia has estimated numbers as of 2006.
If you want more precise numbers, provide them yourself (as you do above).

I realize that, and I was just saying that the entire TC metro has 5x the population of the city of Oakland. Kind of an odd comparison as far as crime rates are concerned. I understand that what you are getting at is that with the population of the entire TC metro, the TC metro still has less murders then Oakland. I am not disagreeing with you.
