All I know on this subject is that Koch is on your right if you are going southbound on 52-- meaning it's west of 52. Can't be Cottage Grove, although it seems sort of out in the middle of nowhere to be considered anything....but maybe Rosemount city limits extend that far.

Rosemount "boundaries" extend to Highway 55 bordering Hastings on the east side of town. The town itself is about 5 miles west of 52.

I've never spent much time in that area, despite the occasional trip to the zoo. We go down 52 pretty often, though, because my mom has relatives down by the Root River-- Lanesboro area.

I'm surprised that Rosemount officially stretches that far east. Lots of room to grow, huh?

Flint Hills owns quite a bit of that land. By law they have to have a buffer of so much space so as long as that stays in place a lot of that land will remain undeveloped. Further south off Cty Rd 46 the UMore Park development is waiting to start. It was part of the land swap for the new Gopher Stadium. Right now that are is just brush and the remnants of the old ammunition plant-it would make a great movie set . The rest of the area is farm land.

What exactly is that refinery? I've always wondered who owns it when I drive by. I also worry if there was some sort of leak if those of us in Rosemount would be adversely affected.

Flint Hills Resources owns the refinery. It's been there for well over 30 years. The buffer of land is there to protect from a explosion. A leak wouldn't do much but a fire/explosion would. I seem to remember a LONG time ago there was a big fire there but it may have been somewhere else too.

When it was still Koch- in 2000, they received the largest environmental fine ever imposed in Minnesota- $8 million dollars.

03/09/2000: KOCH PETROLEUM GROUP SENTENCED

Yes, I would say you wouldn't want to live anywhere near them.

What an odd article, especially the quotes that the author pulled out of people.

Let's try some logic. With no people, you can have no crime. However, as you increase your population, there is more opportunity for crime, as interactions among people increase. At the same time, I see no reason to consider this event anything but a freak event. The 'random' nature of the crime is a little startling, but that can happen anywhere. Welcome to society.

On a related note, it does come off as unsophisticated and naive whenever people give quotes like "Why did [crime] come out here this far?," as if crime is some amorphous blob spreading from the inner cities. Being a suburban dweller most of my life, this view is more prevalent than many would think.
