Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Does anyone have input on living downtown? I was looking at places near 7 corners or maybe across the river at Stone Arch?

Also I would really like to be along the light rail line because I am planning on doing a number of weekend trips. So if I could find a place that is nearby a stop that would be fantastic

The new Mill City Apartments are "claiming" to have rentals starting at $550. (Still under construction) Great area near light rail and riverfront. I will be surprised if this is true. Because most of the condo rentals nearby are $1300 -$2500.

7 Corners is a great area, and you could definitely find something in your price range there. Plus it is right across the river from the U of M East Bank, right next to the West Bank, and close to Augsburg College, so there will be many young adults there. With a lot of cool bars within walking distance.

I would look into more information on the GrandMarc apartments, they can even match you with a roommate if you like. I used to live just south of that area and am now in St. Paul, (which could be a great area for you as well) so feel free to send me a message with any questions.

Robert98,

Thanks for the tip on Mill City District Apartments. They would work well except they aren't opening until Fall/Winter and I'm moving in late July. Any ideas of other places in that area because that seems ideal.

I would strongly suggest moving to the city. I would go for uptown or downtown if you want to meet other people who are out doing things. You can find an apartment in uptown on that budget (or very close). I would hate to see you move to the suburbs. It's really hard to meet new people, especially at your age. Do yourself a favor and stay where the action is.

Living close to the light rail doesn't make a ton of sense when wanting areas that have a young adult vibe. Excluding downtown, the areas along the light rail are going to be residential family-oriented neighborhoods.

I would encourage you to consider uptown Minneapolis, especially streets that on buslines that will take you to a light rail station. For example, Bryant Ave or 38th St have the #23 bus that runs on them (only parts of Bryant, though) - the 23 drops you off at the 38th Street Light Rail station. It's a super easy, super quick ride. This is how I always get to the airport and it's ridiculously.

Looking at this area, or areas providing similar public transit, would greatly extend your options. If you looked at the areas along the #23 bus, you'd be considering areas that cater to young adults, have great walking neighborhoods (access to cafes, cute shops, restaurants), easy parking, bike lanes that could take you to the Greenway or straight to downtown...and they're safe and affordable. Check out the southern parts of Uptown that border the #23 line, the western parts of Kingfield neighborhood that have speedy or immediate access to the busline, and the many, many spots along Bryant Ave. There's plenty of other public transit in these areas, too - very easy to get wherever you want to be.

The suburbs aren't that bad for a young adult. I'm 23 and single and I love the burbs. There are still plenty of young people out here, and I can always drive into Mpls or St. Paul to hang out in the "hotspots." I've met plenty of friends out here too. I enjoy not having to deal with the crime or noise of the city (not that Uptown is bad for crime).

Yep, sure is challenging trying to cope with all of this "crime" and "noise" that plagues the city on a daily basis and never touches the suburbs
