I'll admit this is a selfish post - I'm looking for some unique and preferrably casual restaurants that aren't chain places in the Cities.

So let's make this a thread that can help everyone out:

What is your favorite restaurant in the TC metro - and some reasons why?

The first two that came to mind when I read your title was Forepaughs in St. Paul and the Lowell Inn in Stillwater but those aren't casual.

Bahn Thai restaurant in Plymouth - it's a hole in the wall but serves some of the best Thai food I've ever had.

I have too many to name. My criteria is that I place a strong emphasis on price. I hate overpriced overly pretentious eateries . A few excellent choices that come to mind are:

Marla's - 38th St and Bloomington Ave, Mpls - an interesting mix of Indian and Jamaican cuisine

Victor's 1959 Cafe - 38th St and Grand Ave, Mpls - Cuban food served in a textbook dive.

Blue Nile - East Franklin Ave, Mpls - East African food, great atmosphere, excellent beer selection.

Maria's Cafe - East Franklin Ave, Mpls - Awesome breakfast with South American influences (try the corn pancakes), excellent live acoustic guitar.

Quang - Eat Street (Nicollet Ave), Mpls - Very popular and modestly priced Viatnamese food. I highly recommend their Pho.

Ted Cook's 19th Hole Barbeque - East 38th St (near the light rail), Mpls - Pit Smoked barbeque food and soul food. I've spoken with several passionate barbeque food snobs and they claim Ted Cook's is one of the few places that does it right. I'm no expert to this type of food but we've been there and it's good. Don't be hesitant about the appearance...the food is all that matters anyways, right?

So long as it's clean. If I can see a dirty kitchen or dirty bathrooms, my mind wonders...

Nothing to do with Ted's but If it is in the Happenings Book, chances are the public has figured out the place is lousy.

I really doubt there are any coupons for Ted's in the Happenings book. However, going by your theory there must be at least 3 pages of coupons for Joe's Crabshack...
