Stay way from Woodbury unless you want a small city with bad traffic, inflated home prices and general overdevelopment. Go check out a $550k home in one of Woodbury's new developments and you will see many of the lots aren't even wide enough for a 3 car garage. Proir Lake, then Cottage Grove (you can buy a new home in CG for 10% less than WB).

There is a reason CG is 10% less than Woodbury. If you want less traffic and more house than WB, skip CG and head to the next town....Hastings.

I would say Rochester is the city that is growing the fastest Minnesota. I mean their population did just reach 101,000 people two months ago. And Rochester is growing extremely fast, its gained about 10,000 people in five years.

There is a "big" expansion at 3M, true, but I understand they'll be hiring about 30+ people. That's not alot for a town of over 10,000 people. The jobs here are sparse and a ton of people apply for one position. I moved here in '01 from CA so I could bring my daughter here to receive a good public school education. I had been putting my daughter in private school since kindergarten just because CA schools are so bad (OVERRUN with Mexicans that need special treatment because they can't speak English well enough, I could go on and on about that, having two grown sons go thru the CA school system, having to pay $225.00 per semester PER child to ride the school bus, and that was 15 years ago. Anyway, back to Alex. My older son was here, going to the tech school. He tried very hard to find part time work, eventually being offered a stock boy position at a grocery store, making minimum wage. He wasn't hired because he's not a "local". I've been told this, and experienced it myself when I moved here. Industrial jobs are here if you want to make $8 - 9 an hour and work 3rd shift and/or every weekend. What "construction" is unbelievable? The multiple mini-mall strips, with chiropractors, dentists, lawyers, beauty salons, etc. filling each of them? We've got plenty of those. Or the two new restaurants that we do desperately need here, which will hire about 20 people each, each making about $7.00 hour? Big deal. My son finally left and went back to CA and found a job within a month making 3 times what he made here. Alex is a very nice place to visit, but I wouldn't recommend moving here unless you've got your job already and it's a good one. My husband and I will be moving out of state next summer and we're looking forward to it (my husband is MN born and raised in Alex). Forgot to mention the new hotel being built which will again, employ at probably minimum wage. And two more banks (don't we have enough banks?!?) that will hire only a few people. Just not enough new jobs for the amount of building. Not to mention 4 temp agencies in this small community that offer "many" low pay, long-term positions, most with no benefits.

I took a MN Geography course in college a few years back. My professor was very involved in his field and projected to the class that if anyone is looking for the next population boom that it's gonna be the Elko area. Sure enough...
We checked it out around that time and decided against it simply cause it's way the heck out there...lol But it's definitely gone up, that's for sure.
