Hair Salon
I have 2 adopted kids, age 9 and 13, from Korea and am looking for a hair salon in the northwestern suburbs of Mpls. that does a good job cutting "asian hair" - any suggestions?

For kids...I'd say you can go to your average "Great clips" type place

I don't think you know much about Asian hair, especially Korean hair if you're telling her to go to a Great Clips. I lived in Northwest Wisconsin, so very close to the cities, until I went to college. I was never able to find a place that cut Asian hair well. My suggestion would be to ask around about good hair salons. Call them to see if they have any stylists that have worked with Asian hair extensively. Maybe they were in Japan for some time, or they've lived somewhere with a large Asian population. Also, there is a very small Korean population near the Twin Cities. There are a couple restaurants around the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. If you ever decide to go there you can ask someone that works there if they have any suggestions. They have to get their hair cut somewhere right? And eating Korean food could be a good experience for the kids if they haven't already done so. I would suggest a sea food pancake and maybe some kalbi or bulgogi (meat dishes). If that fails, figure out what kind of hair your kids have. Some Koreans have hair that is fairly easy to manage. It's very straight, and if they keep it short they can style the top and get the sides to stay down if the stylist can keep the length, but take out the weight. Other Koreans have very wavy almost curly hair that can be a little more difficult to deal with. If this is the case with your kids, then have the stylist keep their hair more medium length, but use some sort of product to keep it in some semblance of shape. They can get extremely short hair cuts, but then they will have to keep it that way or deal with it as it grows out. If you want more help feel free to email me. I am a Korean adoptee, so I know the problems with growing up in this region of the country where there are basically no Korean people. My email is rlp271@nyu.edu

There is a hair salon owned by Koreans in New Hope, on the SE corner of 169 and Medicine Lake Road, right next to the donut shop. The donut shop is 2550 Hillsboro, New Hope. I don't know the name or address of the hair salon, although the next time I drive by I'll find out and post here.
Edit: OMG this thread is a year old.

Hey kuan, would you know the name of that salon? I'm also looking for a salon that does Korean/Japanese hairstyles. I just got a haircut last Saturday and I even brought a picture of how my hair was styled in the Philippines, and they still couldn't get it. This was at an upscale salon no less. I don't blame them though, I just need to find an Asian salon around the cities.

OK the place is called TJ's hair studio. I could barely make out the TJ's on the sign.

I went to TJ Hair Studio to get my curly hair straightened and TJ did an excellent job. I was just in town from NYC, where I usually get it done, and I can say she did just as good of a job- if not better! Plus, she is very sweet
You should recommend this place to anyone with curly hair that wants a change once in awhile, but doesn't want to pay extreme salon prices. TJ was very inexpensive and her work was very professional.
