Since you live in MPLS, I highly recommend HCMC. They're birth center (midwife area) is wonderful. I had my firstborn there with a midwife and it was a wonderful experience. My room was like the Hilton. I am totally serious. Midwives are great. HCMC also has fabulous food and is super accommodating.

Whether you can or cannot have a midwife, try the Park Nicollet system. Send me a PM (private message) and I'll give you a name of an awesome physician. She's downtown MPLS. She is highly recommended. She did my tubal ligation, but people rave about her for OB as well. The PNC system also has great midwives, but you now have to go to St. Louis Park/Meadowbrook clinic which is close to you as well (just a jaunt down lake street past Calhoun).

Abbott Northwestern and Fairview also have excellent birth centers and you can have midwives there too. My best friend is a CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife) and has worked in all 3 systems.

With what I know now and the current state of health care being what it is; if you are having a "normal" pregnancy, by all means USE A MIDWIFE for your pregnancy, labor, delivery and woman care. I'm past menopause and an RN; so I'm not giving this advice casually. (I do not work in the OB area though; I just know that you will get better treatment from a midwife and you can actually have the midwife sit down an answer ALL of your questions. Most doctors these days don't have the time to do that anymore).

I agree with JenLee. I had midwives both times and would never do it any other way unless it was a life or death decision (or I wasn't a midwife candidate and had no choice). If you can't do the midwife or that service is unavaliable to you...I recommend you check in to a doula (there are many different styles of doulas). Some hospitals have resources and contact numbers for them. Some are too touchy feely (for my taste), but some are awesome. It's a service you have to shop around for. The first thing I told my midwives was, "Your job is to catch them...Babies deliver themselves". That's just what they did. I am a hands off kind of person and wouldn't have it any other way.

I forgot to add that midwives also deal with epidurals, episiotomies and almost anything else except c-sections, so if you're not a natural kind of person, you can still use a midwife (unless you're having a V-Back).

I just spoke to my friend who is a midwife; she recommends that HCMC midwife birth center above anywhere else. She said that they are the most culturally diverse of anywhere else, and that the care there is really directed by the laboring woman.

Good luck!

Default midwives

I am always impressed by the care I receive by the midwives at Fairview Riverside Women's Clinic. They are compassionate, caring and above all they listen. I highly recommend them!
