Mounds View, Shoreview, Gem Lake
Hi Guys,
I'm surveying in a rough circle around Little Canada, where work is!
What are the schools like in these areas?
How come on realty adverts it always highlights Mounds View schools! Are they better than the norm?
Thanks
Maz--

Shoreview doesn't have a school, and I doubt if Gem Lake does either. Shoreview schools mostly belong to the Mounds View school district except for the extreme southern edge of Shoreview and that is in the Roseville School district.
I'm guessing that Gem Lake is probably in the White Bear Lake School district.

Mounds View Schools are rated very high. It's a great district. One of the top 3 in the state according to many independent surveys, one especially good one by Relocation Magazine.
Their boys soccer team took second in state last fall so I would assume they have a good youth soccer program too.

Hi Golfgal,
Yep you guessed it, schools and soccer are my priorities. I think I'm priced out of Mahtomedi unless I go for a town house?
What are Mounds View schools like for special needs training Golfgal, I read on a different forum that you were an educator?
Also, I'm using online tools to get a general idea of neighborhood stats, and sometimes they're a little unreliable, it would appear Shoreview is an excellent area, with very low crime rates, would that be a fair statement?
Where else in a 15 mile radius around Little Canada would you recommend? Knowing what I'm looking for and of course locationx3 being a consideration. As long as it doesn't take me out of my comfort zone pricewise!!

Just so you know mazzer, basically all of our suburbs are very low crime and very good schools. It's just one of the many beauties of MN.

I agree with Tim, you aren't going to find any real issues with crime in any of the suburbs and all the schools are pretty good. I also wouldn't rely too heavily on the online crime statistics you find. I know I have looked at a few of them, including the one here on City-Data and find them to be inaccurate. I know I looked at our old town and it was rated as a higher crime area then most of the suburbs. It was quite comical since the 'big' crime there was bikes getting taken from people's yards.
The special education programs in the MN schools are all pretty good. I think it will come down to finding a program where you are comfortable vs it being good or bad. Education as a whole is pretty important in MN and the quality of the schools shows that. Yes, there are budget issues as there always are but for the most part you won't have problems anywhere.

I live in Shoreview but within the Roseville School district. Both of my kids are ADHD (they didn't grow out of it and are now young adults); and the Roseville School district was very receptive and willing to work with them and us. They really don't have great sports teams (as far as winning a lot of football and basketball games); but my kids could participate on any team sport they wanted to (or were encouraged to try some team sports).
My friends' kids attended Moundsview School district; and they seemed (to me at least) to place more emphasis on *winning* teams.

OOPS, it is called Expansion Management, http://www.expansionmanagement.com/
It is a relocation magazine. If you look on the top of the page where it says 'research studies' and select 'education quotient" it will show you the top rated districts in the state according to their studies. I like the parameters they used, funding, graduation rates, % of kids going on to college, education level of the community, etc. Many studies are more narrow then that. The one Money magazine puts out only looks at the number of kids that take the SAT, doesn't say how many pass the test, just the number of kids that take the test. A lot of schools use that as their standardized test to save money so their school ranks high--it says nothing about they quality of the school at all.

Roseville has a really good girls Cross Country program. They have 2 sisters that are great runners .
