One piece of advice useful to those moving here from out of state is to consider investing in a remote starter (unless they have a garage). It's SO annoying going outside on a -20F winter morning, trudging through knee-high snow, and trying to start your car, only to have to scrape the ice off of your windshield and windows. Putting a remote starter in your car can avert that situation - simply turn your car's ignition and the defrost function on from the comfort of inside. Do you have a remote starter in your daily driver?

In 2 out of 3, 1 gets stored in the winter.

No we don't, we don't have a garage either. Again, its something thats useful, but definitely isn't a need.

We have them on both of our vehicles and great to have. I work evenings and nights a lot and my car is parked outside and it is great to warm up before leaving. Also great when shopping to have heat going before the young kids are put into the car seats.

My guess is more people have them up where I live than down in southern Minnesota....

Our garage is heated too....but just enough so that the kids can play out there in the winter when its too cold to go outside.

nope. my truck is a stick shift.

As nice as it would be, I find that I walk out, scrape the windows and hop in and drive off. most days I have heat within a mile of driving away.

I hope you are not like many other drivers who do that------poking along as they try to peer thru a windshield that is fogging up.

Nope. Never have, never will either, our vehicles are quite sturdy.

You don't really need one if you have a garage of any sort at all. Even a detached garage will be kept somewhat above outside temperature if you drive a car with a warm engine into it and close the garage door, at least if it's insulated at all.

An alternative approach (for those of us who have sticks): simply start the car before starting to clear it, and set the front blowers and rear defroster to max. The heat will help to melt the bottom of the ice and make it a lot easier to clear the windows, and your car will be warmer when you're done.

No need for a remote starter. My very first car (1980 Celica) had a block heater that plugged in, but I only used it a few times when parked in my parents' driveway on very cold nights. None of my other cars have had any sort of additional heating device, remote starter, etc.

Nope but getting one this year. Not a requirement, but nice to get into a warm car instead of that cold air blowing on you!
