Highway 55 near Plymouth, MN
We are relocating and both my husband and I have jobs on Highway 55 (which is good!). We are looking for housing close to Highway 55 and West of the metro. What's the highway like during "normal" business hours? My husband's hours shouldn't be affected, but mine will.

The only section that's really bad is at 55 crossing 494 going West. It's a 10 minute wait to get across during rush hour.

Hope I'm not too late with this but I just joined. I agree Highway 55 can be a bit frustrating at times, but it's no worse than any other suburban area's roads, better than most.
I'd recommend you check out the Plymouth mass transit option. The cty has its own bus system and it works hard to respond to Plymouth (and surrounding suburbs) resident's needs. Just go to the city's website and you'll find information on it.

If you want to live in that area, there's just one direction to head. Go to the Hiway 55 & Medicine Lake Drive junction. And turn north on Medicine Lake Drive. You are now really in the wilds of some winding roads, woods and waterways. Try Corcoran township.

Does the transit system go out into the cities as well, or just the Plymouth burbs? I'll check the website -- thank you.
We are looking in the Corcoran area and all cities around there. We are a little worried about Highway 55 and our 15 year old son driving it. I hear really bad things about that highway.

Transit Information
the Plymouth Transit goes around Plymouth with the ultimate destination to and from Downtown Minneapolis. There is a service called Dial a Ride which is used to transport Plymouth residents to locations in Plymouth and a few surrounding areas if the buses aren't running at a particular time or location you need to use. It's an on-call reservation required service. Used a lot by the disabled and senior citizens.
As far as Highway 55 is concerned, I think it a pretty good road actually, especially on the Plymouth and western suburb area. My youngest boy is only a couple years older than your son drove it frequently and I had no concerns with him doing so. It's a very straight road with limited access. Some roads in the Twin Cities have curves and hills that have lead to accidents.

55 is a very nice road. I drive it home from downtown every night and the only place it really backs up is when you intersect 494 during rush hour. (If it's really awful I'll just swing up north on NW Blvd and take Rockford Road as a back way in to my apartment..crossing 494 there isn't nearly as bad). Otherwise, you hardly hit any stop lights and you can easily go 55-60.
If I was looking for a house, I'd try to stay east of the 494 interchange if possible though...
