Default Banking Question

We are moving to Minnesota in a few weeks and we would like to ask your opinion on which banks you recommend. We are deciding between Wells Fargo and TCB. Thanks for your help.

TCF is one of those banks that will open an account for anyone, regardless of past banking expeience. I had them for awhile, and I swear that they charged me every month for what they bill as "totally free checking". At least they have ATM's everywhere. Wells Fargo has a lot of ATM's as well, but are bigger sticklers for sticking you with fees.

There are a lot more banks around here to choose from than those two.

We have banked with Wells Fargo for over 20 years (well through all the various name changes anyway). We have no fees that we pay for anything with our accounts, but they do have different levels. We can use any ATM and don't get charged from Wells Fargo. If that ATM charges then we have to pay that fee. Several of the gas stations have no-fee ATM's so that works out great for us.

TCF is more regional and isn't as convenient that way but many of their branches are in the Cub grocery stores so that is nice for a lot of people too.

Staff at our WF is terrific. They have no charge ATM's at all Super America's and some free standing ones at Menards.

Unfortunately TCF does stink! Poor service. Unlike other banks, they will open an account for anyone who hasn't had an account closed involuntarily in the last year. Other banks are much more stringent (Wells I think says 5 years, most Credit Unions will want ZERO chexsystems activity).

I prefer my Credit Union but I've never banked with Wells. .

TCF will open an account for ANYONE as long as it wasnt' TCF themselves that closed the account.

Hubby and I have had a WF account for years plus a credit union and have had little or no problems with either.

However, our kids have had both WF and TCF accounts and BOTH banks made errors in their favors -against our kids! when our kids were in high school and it really made me think twice about how kids are treated by large banking institutions. The kids kept close tabs on their checking accounts but were hit with overdraft fees when they weren't overdrawn!; our sons' overdraft fees totaling over $100 because his paycheck was deposited in someone elses account (and he had used a pre-printed deposit slip for his account; the teller transposed numbers when entering the deposit!).

Our son has had very good luck with USBank; and our daughter belongs to a credit union now. Neither will ever go back to TCF or WF they say.
