Anyone Know When The Leaves Change Colors?
I am trying to pinpoint as close as possible when the leaves change colors around the Minneapolis area. Anyone know?

They usually peak around the first 10 days of October. It varies depending on moisture, temperature, etc.

Explore Minnesota Tourism: Travel Information on Minnesota will have a fall color map when the season comes...I just checked, but it is not up yet (thank goodness!) If I remember correctly, they will post dates of what area peaks when. If you search fall colors on the site, there are routes mapped for nice rides.I think some of the TV station web sites may do it too. Like Kare11 etc....Thanks for reminding me...I may have to plan some motorcycle trips!

Because of a hot spell and lack of rain, the leaves are falling an turning in Minneapolis already this year. Such conditions don't speak well for full autumn colors. So this year, expect dull fall colors, mainly grey and orange.

That only goes for a small fraction of the trees. There should still be decent fall colors, but he is right, it likely won't be a banner year.

Do the leaves start turning early in September in north central Minnesota and the Iron Range? I looked at the temperature readings and some areas had lows in the 30s and 40s around Hibbing and Pine River a week ago.

Yes, in September you'll have good color in the northern part of the state. Peak time on the north shore of Lake Superior is usually the last week of Sept, but you start to see color change all through the month.
Those lows aren't a big deal.... certainly not the beginning of fall! It is back in the 90's this week. Fall color is determined by the amount of sun per day in addition to sustained fall temps, in addition to other things.
