Moving back from Texas - Homes/Catholic Schools
This is already turning into a shocker! I was just looking at homes in Chanhassen and Chaska - Yikes! My nice, new home in a gated community with a "multi-ammenity" pool in San Antonio is about HALF the cost. We moved away in 2003 and all I have to ask is - what happened here!?
We would like to stay on the west side. Any other areas that are nice? We are from Woodbury before (never got over tothe west) and I willl be located W or NW. Budget is about 300-400. Salary is 145-160, but I do not want to spend every dime on a home - Oh, I can't get over the cost!
Also we need an elementary Catholic School. We would like to live near (or close) to the school. Are there any openings in these schools usually? In San Antonio, parents sleep outside over the weekend of open registration to get thier kids into the Catholic Schools. This is due to the low performing local schools.
Thanks. BTW - everybody in Texas thinks I am Canadian due to my accent still. Saying "pop" is a dead give-away!

We are going back to Texas and love the home prices there. The taxes are not as bad as in Minneapolis either. Our home here is appraised at $600,000 and we are buying the same size home, (new and backing up to a golf course) for $320,000 in TX. Property taxes here are $6,900 and in TX they are $5,100. Utilities will be about the same as well. Property taxes are projected to increase about 10% in 2008 with county increase, school referendum increase and sales tax increase in Hennepin County.

Most of the Catholic schools in the twin cities are "full" but will have some openings. You usually need to be a member of the parish to gain admission but not always. Considering you are looking in one of the most expensive areas, yes, housing costs are a shock. Also consider that construction costs due to the demanding climate are greater and just the overall demand to live in Minnesota is higher because of the schools, employment opportunities, etc.
I don't know where you are working but you could try looking a little further out for less expensive homes or look to other areas of the metro. The western suburbs are the most expensive because of the convenience to downtown and the lakes.
