NYC has a lower crime index because it has over 8 million people. Part of why NYC is a much safer city now that it was 20 or 30 years ago is because of heavy-handed, and in Giuliani's case, trigger-happy, policing. Police were needed on the streets. At the same time, there are alot of problems too. Socioeconomic reasons can be part of it.

My husband and I are also an interracial couple living and going to school in Minnesota. Ufortunately we have had a terrible experience in the fact that people stare at us a lot, they don't talk to us as if we're human beings, and even the fact that I'm not "from the area" but a different part of MN throws people off here. I've only made a few friends and my husband (biracial) has made none, even though he's fun and outgoing. Back in Jersey he had a much better time making friends of all cultures. Just because people say they're Democrats doesn't mean they're not racist too. (Which is sad to say because I'm a Democrat).

NY city is not safe. Try to find someone that lives there to talk that crap.
The Gov is just trying to promote tourism and manipulate the stats to make
people feel safe when they visit. Parts of that city savages run wild commiting crimes all there life long. Parts of NY, cops and good people, will
get attacked just for entering. Manhattan is your safest bet.

I didn't say 'safe', I said 'safer than 20 years ago'.

Racism in Minnesota
There is racism all over Minnesota, as the people here are closed-minded and intolerant. The best bet you would have is to move to the Twin Cities or the suburbs. There is alot less racism there than anywhere else. Anything outside of the Twin Cities, you will find racism, sorry to say. The Twin Cities area has alot more cultured and civilized folk than anywhere else. Even their schools are better compared to the rest of the state. There are no civilized towns outside of the metro area.

It's always amazing to me how many different answers people give to this type of question. I would guess that the type of person YOU are may influence the type of response you get from the natives anywhere: if you are outgoing and friendly and respectful; then the natives will be the same.
I do think that (especially in MN) if you seem desperate for friends and company or overly needy it may drive the natives off just as a bad attitude or grumpy personality would. I'm not 100% sure of that; but it might be worth thinking about.

Oh my God, I'm a biracial professional man and this is EXACTLY what I go through on a daily basis!
It's even gotten to the point where I've had to file a discrimination case against the owner of the office building we rent from, as they've been trying to push us out for months now.
I know all whites are not like this - I'm from Vegas (and thankfully my wife now sees how bad things are here and has agreed to move back this fall) and color really does not matter there...at all.
I'm well spoken 30 something and far from looking like a gang banger, yet the way I'm stared at, you would think I was carrying a shotgun and ski mask.
And here's the kicker - They'll stare at me for minutes at a time, but when I smile and say "hello" they quickly look away and pretend like I don't exist. God forbid they fraternize with a coloured.
I know this is an odd request, but after 2.5 years in Minnesota, my wife and I have met nobody. We live in Eden Prairie and would love to get to know another couple, especially one of such a similar background. My email (at least one I'm comfortable giving on an open forum ) is xcelsius1@msn.com
Give us a holler, we're fun people!
