Minnesota is nice!
My husband and I are an interracial couple. We have two children and plan to have a lot more. We have been thinking a lot about moving out to Minnesota, but we've heard that there is a lot of racism there. Are there any places in Minnesota where there is very little racism, without it being "ghetto"? The state sounds so perfect for us besides the racism issue, so we'd hate to not be able to move there.
If you are concerned with racism, you have been misinformed.
The state of MN is a very welcoming and friendly state. We have the second highest concentration of homosexuals, after CA, and the second highest concentration of Hmong, in the US. There are opportunities in the school for children to experience many cultures. We celebrate diversity in many public platforms, from the Cinco de Mayo celebration to the Gay pride march. We offer opportunities on many levels to not only celebrate diversity, but to embrace it. Minnesota is a melting pot!
I would recommend looking up a calander of events, and think of moving to the Twin Cities metro area. In the metro you will experience people from all walks of life. There is no reason to be concerned.
I will not say racism does not happen, because sadly, it happens here as it happens other places. I will say however, that most people do not see skin color, or lifestyle choices as a parameter. Most of us accept and love people for what they are, people. Good Luck!

I couldn't read all these posts but just wanted to chime in that my experience living here almost my entire life is that racism is VERY frowned upon. I live in a small suburb 20 minutes from the Twin Cities and if a person makes a racist comment around here they are usually outcasted. I've even seen half the men in a bar get up and confont a man who said the "N" word, white men mind you, start fighting with him and then have him thrown out of the bar!
I know I'd never associate with a racist person!

I am originally from Somalia and I have lived in the state of Minnesota for more than 5 years. I have yet to encounter any racism or intolerance directed towards me or people I know. I think generally speaking, Minnesota is a very Hospitable place.

I am happy for your experience. Sadly, not all people have the same experience. There is racism and intolerance everywhere. Minnesota is no exception. You are having good experiences, and you have found the good in Minnesota.

To TheDeacon, I am sorry you have had such a miserable experience in MN. I will admit, being from SoCal originally with Vegas so close, that places like Vegas and parts of CA, NY, FL are definitely more open to differences. But I have found that you are going to find some racism any where you go. As a white female growing up in SoCal, I was harassed at times by non-white girls simply because I was white and they assumed that I must be prejudice. Ironically, I had already experienced prejudice when I was younger living in a small town in the South so it is a disgusting thing to me. I had friends in the South that I couldn't have over because they weren't white and I didn't fit in with most of my white counterparts from day 1 because I was a Yankee by birth. I guess my hubby and I have been very fortunate in MN because we have only encountered the stares in more rural areas of MN, which we don't go to often. Then again, perhaps I don't notice the stares so much because the few times I've noticed someone staring in the TC metro area, it's been a woman staring. My husband is an attractive man so I figure the woman is just admiring what I have and wishing that she had a little spice like that in her life (my hubby is Indian).
I wish you luck and much happiness when you move back to Vegas. It's just sad to me that you've had such a terrible experience in MN!

Well that’s given. You can easily find bad apples in any given place without having to scratch the surface too hard. However, compared to other places I have been, generally speaking, Minnesota is quite a hospitable place. I am very confident that there elements within our society that are inherently intolerant and what-have you; for example we had a bigot who taught us History (and they warned him after I complained) in high school, but I think it would not be an exaggeration to say Minnesota is a very hospitable place certainly when compared to Maine and other places I have lived.
