2.) Do most homes in Minnesota have basements?

3.) In the winter months does it snowy every single day?

Yes, yes, NO.

We have a lot of Casinos on the Indian reservations. Probably 90%+ homes have basements. We don't get snow every day in Minnesota. In know in our old town we got a whopping 9" of snow 2 years ago and 21" of snow last year.

Like Golfgal said, it doesn't snow every day--it's common to get flurries, just a dusting, pretty often, and it doesn't add up to much, but it's also common to get a big dumping of snow--like a few feet. That's really a bummer, especially when it happens in late March like it did this past winter, but it doesn't happen all that often. I'd say at least one to three times a year, though.

The reason you always see snow on the ground is because typically once we get snow it stays with us until spring thaw. This is not the banana belt like some areas of Colorado or other places where it can consistently get back above freezing during parts of the day.

Ah, but better in March than October. I can remember 3 or 4 times in my youth when we had a big snow fort in our front lawn on Halloween (Iowa/Minnesota border). At least in March it will melt soon!

Like everyone else said: Minnesota has a bunch of casinos. Almost all Minnesotan houses have basements. During the winter, it is extremely cold, and it doesn't snow every day.

ic....so the previous snow doesnt have time to thaw and so the ground stays covered with it all thruout winter...that explains it all. im glad there are basements there. where i live...we cant have basements b/c we're well below sea level and hurricanes flood the land each year

1. Yes, many, operated by Indian tribes.

2. Almost all I have seen do, except if they are mobile homes. They are more or less a necessity in many areas of the state where tornados are a serious threat.

3. It doesn't snow every day, but in the northeastern part of the state, where I live, you can expect there to be at least a few inches of snow on the ground every single day from December to March. Not to mention below-freezing temperatures, day and night, almost every day in December, January, and February.

What about, in general, how many months out the year approximately is it warm enough to wear short sleeves outside?

That's a difficult question to answer, as some people can tolerate cooler weather better than some. What is short sleeved no coat weather to me (because I love the cold!) is coat weather for someone else. I live in the northwest corner of the state, opposite Grand Forks ND, and out weather is quite a bit colder than the Twin Cities most of the year, especially the winter. My career is also in weather forecasting, and up here I would say May 15-Sep 15. You could extend that to May 1-Sep 30 in southern MN I would guess. But weather does change day to day and you can get cool morning in June and late August where a light coat is necessary. Only probably true hot period is from Jun 15 to Aug 15 when it is very rare for a need for a coat.

I love the cold and cant wait til winter, as I dont like it much above 70.
But I am one of the few.

Dan
