That is exactly my point, The state it is in now. So what would be the point of boosting Duluth as an all american city when it is a city on the brink of extinction. By the way, who wants to give tours of a mansion where gruesom murder occured as one of your favorite tourist attractions. Yeah right, that's the city I want to live in.. Mind you, you given a good economic reason Duluth has plumeted but you fail to address the fait that awaits Duluth for its wrong doing, corruption and predjudice...

That would depend on what you consider 'celebrated". The statue is in place as a reminder of a horrible injustice that took place in Duluth and something that hopefully, through remembering it, will never be repeated.

On October 10, 2003 the event was commemorated in Duluth, by dedicating three 7-foot-tall bronze statues to the three men who were killed. The statues are part of a memorial across the street from the site of the lynchings. The Duluth Lynchings Memorial is the largest lynching monument in the United States.

At the memorial's opening, thousands of the citizens of Duluth gathered for a ceremony. The final speaker at the ceremony was the grandson of one of the most prominent leaders of the lynch mob:
It was a long held family secret, and its deeply buried shame was brought to the surface and unraveled. We will never know the destinies and legacies these men would have chosen for themselves if they had been allowed to make that choice. But I know this: their existence however brief and cruelly interrupted is forever woven into the fabric of my own life. My son will continue to be raised in an environment of tolerance, understanding and humility, now with even more pertinence than before.

In other words, The monument is there to try and turn a negative into a positive.

Tours of Glensheen are given not because of the murders that took place there but, because it's a significant part of Duluth History. Chester Congdon played a large role in the development of not only the city but, the whole region. The murder scenario is never mentioned in any of the tours or the publicity. The house holds much more history than just the murders.

Default Really

I'll tell you what, it may sound like predjudice on my part but as I stated it's only fact. And to point the finger it sounds like someone who has justified every dark secret and every negative fact about Duluth only to label the city as a city of bright future but if you really know Duluth, tell me, why do all the college students graduate from UMD and then leave the city for far more better opportunity. You justify the truth but all I can say is stay tuned for more to come. Oh by the way, the Glensheen murders may not be part of the tour but don't you think it's creepy and bizarre let alone the murders always seem to leak out before or after the tour. Anniebob, you can't play down the truth. The truth is always stronger than excuses and justification...

Because that's what people do. All college towns would be full to overflowing if people didn't leave after they finished school.
Probably at least 1/2 of the students there came from somewhere else to begin with.

And no, I don't think it's creepy that they have tours of Glensheen. The murders were one brief moment in a very long history of the estate.
And of course, without the tours there's no way the University could afford the upkeep on the place.

That must mean the police there are doing their job then, eh?

BTW.....since the title of this thread is: Why Duluth is a great place to live, your posts are totally off topic.
You should probably go create a "Let's bash Duluth" thread.
