Metro Transit / Train (Eagan, Anoka, Elk River: live in, buses, moving to)

How does the metro transit / train thing actually work? If you live in another City -- say Elk River and there's a park and ride there -- how does it work? I've searched and searched and can't seem to find anything. We will be moving to the area and I'd like to participate in the mass transportation thing to save gas/money/the environment?

Well, there is no rail service as yet to the Northwest Metro, but that will change when the Northstar Commuter Line is completed in the next few years. I take a park and ride from Eagan, and all you do is park for free there and get on the bus just like you would if you picked one up off the corner in town. I am not that familiar with the Northwest Metro, but it looks like there are four or five express buses (they are the bus lines with three digits) that leave from a park and ride in Anoka.
