Dayton offered to raise income taxes on Minnesotans with a taxable income of 1,000,000 and up, but the Republicans said no.

Republicans and Dayton weren’t only separated by fiscal issues. Republicans loaded bills with other goodies. In the final days of negotiations, Republicans were still insisting on legislation supporting voter ID and restrictions on abortion and stem cell research in their talks with Dayton.

There's always more to the story.

Yes, there is. If the budget didn't include a 12% increase over two years, there would be no need to increase taxes.

I was not aware they were trying to cram in voter ID, abortion and stem cell research restrictions. and the fact that Dayton upped the income requirements. But let's get real here...social conservatives don't care about debt of deficits...they care about promoting their conservative social agenda.

I can't speak for all social conservatives, but I care about the debt and deficit. I'm not a one-issue voter. Unfortunately for me, I support Dayton's fiscal policy, but the Republicans' views on abortion and stem cell research (I'm totally against voter ID). So I'm not sure who to support in all this -- I just want a resolution.

Do you really think you could do that and leave unscathed? Remember I live in Georgia, and not that far from Kennesaw (where homeowner firearms are mandated by law).

I should probably add that I'm being silly, mostly. But my alarm system would probably make your ears ring.

Minnesota government shutdown begins after talks fail | Reuters

Dayton refused to call a special session and keep funding going for another week of negotiations. He plays hardball - was this a smart move?

That's why you think we got to this point? Try again. According to one news outlet:

Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton, looking to pressure GOP lawmakers into a deal including tax hikes, said he would not agree to pass a temporary funding measure.
But Republican House Speaker Kurt Zellers criticized Dayton for "throwing in the towel" on the shutdown.
“This is about shutting down government for a political purpose," he said in a press conference shortly before midnight.
In May, Dayton vetoed a Republican budget that closed the state's $5 billion deficit with only spending cuts. Republicans offered about $1 billion in revenue increases late Thursday, but Dayton said they did not go far enough.

Again, the budget is GROWING by 12% from $30 billion to $34 billion. That's not enough for the governor... he wants to spend even more! How many of you are going to spend 12% more over the next two years than you did over the last two? Anyone?

Somebody please give me a logical reason why any state should not require ID to vote. Please. I can't wait to hear this. (And for my purposes, "to facilitate voter fraud by [a particular organization or political party]" does not qualify as a logical reason.)
