There have been some fantastic replies on this thread, and I thank you all. It's the middle of Sep now, and I hope to take a motorcycle ride here in the next few weeks to look around the Ely area.
I'll admit, I've never been a warm weather person and always prefer the colder months of the year. But 60 below? That's cooooooooooold friend!
Maybe the hunting/fishing/knife business opportunities would out-weigh the cold.
Don't know.
I need to finish my life out somewhere!
I lived in Minnesota as a child and spent so many summers there I forget.
20 visits or more it I'ntl Falls.
Always loved each trip.
Spent about 16 years in Miama and Atlanta. Like living in Hell.

Default don't forget snow

Today the weather has been bad and we got quarter size hail for about 15 mins.. it's getting colder now, and don't forget Ely can see snow in mid sept, so be careful on your bike on your trip up here.

Thanks for that info.
I've been watching the weather myself as well.
As long as there's no ice on the road I'm good.
I'm not a scaredy-cat.
That link from earlier on was a really good link to the Ely area.
You folks are very informative and I appreciate that.

Ely need the tourists otherwise we wouldn't make it, some old timers and people here can be rude till they get to know you.. Everyone has their place here.. If you sit in someone else's seat at the dinner you will get dirty looks lol
Ely is a great town.
I moved back here i was away for 10 years, nothing really has changed in that time.
Ely has meth labs and houses just like any other place in this world.. alot of under age drinking just like other towns too.
Its a nice place to go out to the BWCA.. thats where the wonder begins..3000 people live here.. Jobs are here if you wash dishes or cook, things close down or become slower with seasons.. but its all in walking distance and that makes it a small town with a country theme... Just like any other town.. i like it

It is cold! But remember that's the record, so it's not like it gets that cold every single winter. However, it does hit 20 below just about every winter. Even the mildest winters ever recorded it still hits -20 for a few days. A normal winter would have many weeks of 20 below, even a few nights of 30 below...people who grew up there don't really consider it "cold" until it hits 30 below. That's how I am now. I see 20 below zero as just normal or typical fair. No big deal.

So it is cold, but don't let that scare you too much.... if you really like outdoor sports, or learn to like them, and dress properly, winter can be as much, if not more fun, than summer. Or you could just hibernate all winter, but what's the fun in doing that?

Enjoy your bike trip up north, but definitely be careful. Snow is definitely not unusual come October, but it could also be 70 degrees, or both within 2 days time....so dress in layers. it just depends on the year. Have fun!
