That is a pretty good list for sure and It would be great to see some of them them in a green sweater. yes - I was making the point that you really can't look at the MN natives the wild have on roster as a real indicator of talent coming out of the state.

I'm not saying Minnesota is irelevant in hockey talent but, for whatever reason, the trend away from US hockey "dominance" by the Minnesota natives can't really be ignored anymore and over the past 3 Olympics, the hockey rosters are taking a decidely non-Minnesota influence compared to the good old days.

total roster spots Olympic Hockey Teams 2002 - 2010

15 - Michigan
12 - New York
10 - Minnesota
9 - Massachusetts
4 - Wisconsin/Connecticut

Surprised at NY on that list. No surprise from MI or MA.

Thats true. A good measurement is per capita. All those states have much more people. (besides WI)

Look at the Miracle team, that had 12/20 kids from MN if I'm not mistaken.

Go pull up Rosters of AHL and ECHL teams and you'd be amazed at how many hail from MN

but haven't we been all along touting the high level of hockey participation by Minnesota residents for years. According to this article Minnesota has more players (2009-2010) than any other state.

Where Hockey Is Growing, State by State - NYTimes.com

53,450 - Minnesota
51,404 - Michigan
46,389 - New York
43,445 - Massachusetts

what is interesting, is in comparing these most recent totals to 1998 - 1999, Minnesota's participants have risen by more than 10,000 (+24%) while Mass. has remained stable (+1%), New York's has dropped by 3.3% and Michigan has lost about 3,500 (-6.5%).

what gives? are we flooding our rinks with clutzy kids from Woodbury and Shakopee taking up valuable instruction from the gifted athletes?

and unfortunately, it is almost impossible to get a game going in Hawaii anymore. if you go there on vacation, bring your gear...the other 11 players are waiting for someone to show up.

Using your logic you could include Sidney Crosby since he played at Shattucks .. Haha

I forgot about Oshie

Minnesota is still a huge supplier of hockey talent, but a lot of it is bypassing the high school game to go play junior hockey, either in Canada, the USHL, places like Shattuck, or the US development team in Michigan. This is going to continue if the MSHSL doesn't start allowing more games.

You guys should remember that Herb Brooks brought a national championship home to Minnesota made up of a roster of entirely Minnesota natives. If I remember correctly when he did it it was the first time in multiple decades and I don't know if that's ever been repeated or if it ever will. The Gophers or UMD could probably do it, but they have went against the unwritten protocol now and use non-natives. They don't use many though (I think the Gophs have about 4 and UMD has a similar amount).
