I love the North Shore and have gone there for a fall vacation most of my years on this planet. Hiking along the rivers and their waterfalls through forests is wonderful!

This year, I'm hankering for a change. Especially, the long drives between the parks is feeling like a bit of a drag.

Please suggest some new spots for me and mr yakimono to explore!

We're looking for:
  • Hikes/walks of 2 to 5 hours daily total; different trails every day.
  • Housekeeping units available - cabin preferred, hotel/motel/inn possible.
  • Within about 4 hours of the Twin Cities by car.
  • The less touristy the better.

I'll probably remember another crucial component after I click submit, but this will be a good start--thanks!

How about the UP? Not in-state, but still within ~5 hour drive. A friend went and did some hiking somewhere up there (I think maybe the Porcupine Mountain State Park area?) and the pictures he showed were pretty awesome. I know I've looked at renting cabins up there, so there are definitely some available. I had the sense too, that it was not particularly touristy, either, when i was looking at staying up there. Just more of a rustic, out-there-in-the-woods feel to the places I looked at.

Another, slightly closer option would be Yellow River State Park in Iowa. Still out of state, but slightly closer, and there are many miles of trails there. I have stayed there (camping once, and in a B&B once) and I highly recommend it.

Iowa State Parks are free, FWIW.

Probably doesn't really fall into the "less touristy" category, but still beautiful area. Lanesboro.com - The Bed & Breakfast Capital of Minnesota -
