Neal Broten

Star at Roseau high school where he appeared in three straight state tournaments (but never won)
WCHA rookie of the year in first year at UMinn
Hobey Baker award winner at UMinn
NCAA champ with UMinn
Olympic gold with USA
Stanley Cup winner in the NHL

Only player in history to have won NCAA title, Hobey Baker award, Olympic gold, and Stanley Cup. And since ice hockey is Minnesota's #1 sport, it has to be an ice hockey player as Minnesota's #1 athlete.

If this poll is done five years from now, Lindsey Whalen may be one of the choices. She is still relatively early in her WNBA career but was fantastic with the Golden Gophers and is very good with the Lynx these days. The Gophers made it to the final four with her on the team in her senior year. Without her, they make an early first game exit out of the postseason no question about it. I am not saying she would be #1, but if she continues at this rate, worthy of at least being on the list.

At this point, IMO Dave Winfield deserves the honor. He had far more speed than Hrbek while still having power and was talented at more than just baseball.

I think Molitor beats Winfield (though not by much).

Molitor career (21 seasons, 2683 games)

.306/.369/.448 | Hits: 3319 | HR: 234 | RBI: 1307 | WAR: 72.5

Plus he has the distinction of being the only player to get his 3000th hit on a triple

209 more hits than Winfield in almost 300 fewer games.

--

Winfield career (22 seasons, 2973 games)

.283/.353/.475 | Hits: 3110 | HR: 465 | RBI: 1833 | WAR: 59.4

Neither of them ever won MVP. Both were inducted on first ballot. So it's a close call, but I think Molitor edges out Winfield.

Eugene "Mean Gene" Okerlund.

or

Bill Christian played on the 1960 gold-winning U.S. Olympic hockey team. His son, Dave Christian of Moorhead, was part of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" U.S. team that won Olympic gold.

Molitor is for sure in the top 10, but, seems (correct me if I'm wrong), the only sport he kicked butt at was Baseball. Winfield being drafted by 4 professional teams, in 3 pro sports, speaks for itself.

As much as I eat, drink and sleep hockey myself, I would realistically say, that, it's the #2 sport in MN. #1 (unless you count fishing, lol), is football.
