I may be looking to relocate my family to this area and have a few things I'd like some input on.

Would like a commute of not much more than 1 hour drive. We are looking for small acreage to have some livestock; I am looking for a farmhouse or something we can fix up/add on to. We are simple people and not so much materialistic but to raise the children around this atomosphere is huge for us. Our children are under seven and we have six. Budget wise I am not sure but the cheaper the better, we can make a lot of things work.

As an idea, locally, in a small town of less than 2000 people, I pay 1k per month for a 3bdrm brick ranch house with full basement - 3k sf total on 1 acre. 30 min commute. 1 car attached garage. 30x40 metal outbuilding.

Any input on where, etc...would be greatly appreciated.

Belle Plaine or Jordan area. Easy commute up to Eden Prairie and gives you the small town feel you want. Otherwise out west on Highway 5/212 in places like Glencoe. South on 169, Henderson is a lovely little town. Gaylord might work too, Arlington and and points between Gaylord and Norwood Young America. Anything in that "vector" out from EP will be fine and you should be able to find what you are looking for. The farther out the less expensive but factor in gas and it might be worth paying a bit more for the house.

Chaska, Waconia, or Victoria are right down the road and have their own downtowns.

They are all bigger than 2000 people though--Victoria might not be but it's probably not what they are looking for--it's a pretty expensive area

Great. Thanks for the input. Golf Gal, you touched briefly about the commute. What is your opinion on the best, or least congested traffic coming in to Eden Prairie from the N, E, S, and W? I typically am in by 6am, and off at 6. Thanks.

I would say they are all about the same. 212 is probably the best though. 169 gets pretty congested in Eden Prairie but there are roads you can take to alleviate that too-side roads as you get closer, etc. Depends really where in EP you will be.

True. I didn't read further down. Just saw how they preferred a rural type city that was an easy commute to EP, didn't realize they wanted 2,000 or less.

Being employed in Eden Prairie is a stroke of luck for you. Which you need having left the Valhalla of barbecued everything to come here. Don't expect our barbecue to measure up.
