Julie Herman is on a distinguished road
I am from SD and went to school in Brookings and offer a couple thoughts. I don't think you need to worry about the gay thing. People don't want to know and are fairly private midwestern people. So unless you are advertising it, it won't be an issue and people won't ask. Also, tax wise LIVE IN SD - NOT MN OR IOWA. Brandon is kind of quaint town, but I kind of agree with the others in that it is fairly flat, which means it can be quite windy in the winter and I-90 can get very treacherous in winter months due to ice and poor visibility. There is a bad weather pocket or micro-climate from about Luverne going East to Jackson - so I wouldn't venture further East. I guess I would look south if you don't want to be in the city. You might try asking a realtor to do a search for you in a radius 30 miles around the city looking for whatever kind of property you want. If you need a recommendation let me know and I'll find out who is the best in that area.
Julie

One quick funny note about your member name sugarbeet, when we first arrived in East Grand Forks MN my partner and I got out of the car at the hotel and smelled this putrid odor in the air and thought the sewer system was backed up. When we asked the lady at the front desk if there was a problem with the plumbing she laughed and said no it comes from sugarbeets. That was our first experience on being on the plains.
LOL, that was my first experience with that part of the world, too. Who'da thunk something so sweet could smell so bad??

Another experience with sugar beets was when I was traveling up that way on business. Beets were falling off the fully loaded truck ahead of me. The temperature was down around zero, and the beets were frozen solid like rocks. I backed off and carefully avoided running over any of them!

Good luck with your move!
