Northfield - fastest rate of new gangs? (Minneapolis, St. Paul: apartment complexes, rentals)

Our realtor told us to stay away from Northfield - that it has the fastest growing rate for new gangs. Is this just "urban legend?" (He's from St. Paul so he may just be going off of hearsay).

I haven't heard that about Northfield, but I'd be very sad (and surprised) if it were true. Northfield is a very pretty little town. Small downtown area, lots of well-kept older homes. Kindof spendy though.

When we lived there, it was very safe.

Having spent a lot of time in Northfield I would say your realtor doesn't know what he is talking about. First, Northfield is an expensive place to live, second, there isn't much for rental property in town, these two things alone preclude a lot of gang development for the most part. Northfield is a lovely town but if you are looking to commute into the twin cities, it will be a long commute.

I concur with golfgal. If you wanted to rent there first to check it out, most rentals are houses (or floors of houses). In fact, there weren't any large apartment complexes when I lived there.

The commute to Mpls is only about 25-30 minutes if you'd be working on the south side. But it is congested.

Northfield is a small "college" town about 30 minutes south of Minneapolis. There's ton of farmland between the Metro and Northfield. I've been there multiple times and the closest thing I've seen to a gang member was a college student at St. Olaf (a religious college).

You need a new realtor!

Thanks! I am working in Bloomington (1 block from the MOA). Just about anywhere from here is going to be congested I suppose.

Actually, going up Cedar Ave from Northfield to Bloomington won't be too bad except for the lights in Apple Valley. Heading up Hwy 3 and over through Rosemount or so and then to Cedar will be pretty easy too.

Having had a sister that goes to school there and anyone that lives in the southern metro knows that its a growing place. The whoel darn south metro is growing like a weed. And of course towns that are commuter towns - well you get everything running through. I wouldn't go as far to call NOrthfield a NOrth Minneapolis though!!!

It is a beautiful town, lots of character with the vibrancy of a college town. Its growing and it has/will alot to offer. GO for it. And get a new realtor. Just be smart- crime happens everywhere....
