Is this site reliable?

It looks that way. I just never heard of it... I'm digging very deep.

"Is it safe? Is It Safe??.....IS IT SAFE?!"
Regardless, be sure nobody tries to extract any of your teeth!

And, yes, this site can give you a good idea of an area, and most direct questions will be answered to varying degrees. And many of those answers will often be accurate.

But, in order to get a vibe, one must usually VISIT a place first. Because, vibes depend on what an area gives off and how a person receives vibes. It is a 2-way street, and many factors vary into your result.

LoL safe? I didn't quite get that.... Is this not a safe site to check out?

I'm going to visit some places in March in MN, but until then I need to research and check out which places I WILL be checking out. I'll have probably 2 days to get a feel for it all. Then decide whether my family will be coming up that way.

This decision is massive for my family. It would be a complete change.

Thanks for your inputs. Much appreciated.

It's ok. Everyone will give you their honest opinion, but we can have some pretty strong biases, too, so take what you read with a grain of salt.

It's a good starting point, but everyone has their own perceptions. I recall one discussion where people were debating the walkability of one area -- with some posters talking about what a great area it was for walking, while others thinking it was terrible! We were talking about the exact same location, but from the descriptions and opinions you'd never have known it.

Same thing could be said for any number of other topics. The more specific you can be, the better your answers will be. Instead of asking "is it a long commute from X," or "is there shopping nearby," clarify what you mean -- "how much time on an average day during rush hour is it from X to Y," or "is there shopping within X miles". And if asking about something really debatable -- the above-mentioned "walkability," for example -- be ultra-specific about how you, specifically, are defining that particular term.

I noticed on your other threads that you are researching many areas of Minnesota and I was happy to give you my thoughts. Here's one final and friendly thought - don't try to squeeze too much into those two days. You will not be able "to get a feel for it all"; i.e., the Twin Cities, Duluth, St. Cloud, East Grand Forks, Marshall, etc. in only two days. (Well, at least I wouldn't be able to.) Plus, that's a lot of driving!!

Out of all the areas you talked about in your threads have you come up with a solid plan for your two days in Minnesota?

I wish you a good, safe trip and don't forget you may run into a snowstorm so plan accordingly.

I like that! Very good point about "vibes".

Thanks for the reply.

Bemidji and Duluth is my type of weather and style as far as being isolated etc...

Honestly we'll probably at this point spend 1 entire day in the TC area, then go up to St. Cloud. That is the most safe and realistic thing to happen.

We will need decent jobs to start our life in MN and the SC/TC area is the best bet right?

You all have been great about this. I'm really trying to make this happen.

MN is the front runner but Colorado and Grand Forks/Fargo is a slight possibility.

I would say that the TC area is probably the worst option to start. Not that there aren't a lot of jobs there but for the jobs you are looking at, they are not very high paying and the cost of living in the TC is high in comparison to what you are used to and to the payscale for those jobs. Unemployment rates most areas outstate is lower than you will find in the TC area--but that is pretty low too. You can fine a place to live for 1/2 or less what you will spend in the TC for about the same salary..that alone is worth looking elsewhere. Focus on towns like Mankato, Marshall, Willmar, Morris, Bemidji, etc. I would say that Marshall is probably your best bet for affordability, quality of life and job opportunities. You can find a nice place to live, 3 bedroom, 2 bath townhome/house to rent for $650/month, which is very affordable on even two jobs paying $10/hour. In the TC that same job might pay $12-14/hour but to find a similar place to live you are looking at $1500+ for rent.
