Hi,
I work in Remer, but live in Grand Rapids (about a half hour away). Remer is a very small town (about 300 people) surrounded by a whole lot of natural beauty. If you're into the outdoors (fishing, snowmobiling, etc.) you'll love it. If you're a "big city" person, you'll probably have a hard time. It's northern Minnesota, so yes, it does get cold in the winter.
As far as shoppoing and services, you have the basics in town (a couple of gas stations, a grocery store, a hardware store, etc.) but you'll have to go to Grand Rapids for Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot, etc. Remer does have a small clinic, but the nearest hospital is also in Grand Rapids. They just built a brand new building.
The Remer school district is only two buildings. There's an elementary school in the town of Longville and an elementary/secondary complex in Remer. Is your child physically handicapped or does he/she have a learning disability? Most of the Remer school is all on one level, except for an older section of the high school that has a few classrooms upstairs (there is no elevator though...that part of the building is pre-war.) The high school (7-12) has a very good special ed department.
Most of the people are friendly enough, but you'll probably be considered an "outsider" for quite some time. This doesn't mean people will be rude to you, but it will take some time for them to trust you...but of course you'll usually find that in any small town you go to. Remer has a lot of churches for such a small town, so if you're at all faith-oriented, that might be a good way to meet people. Overall, people are pretty laid back and casual. It's definitely not a fancy-schmancy type of place.
Real estate right in town is pretty reasonable. If you want to buy a lake home outside of town you'll obviously pay more. If you want to live in the country (non-waterfront) that's also very do-able.
Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, post back and I will do my best to answer!
