Default Whats everything I need to know about Grand Marais?

Hello, I plan on moving to Grand Marais eventually, after I graduate college in a bigger city. I'm just wondering now, what is life like up there? How expensive is it? Are the prices really high if I don't live right on the lake shore? I'm also wondering what the climate is like, I defently know that it will be cold in the winter, but does it get so much snow that it will stay on the ground for almost the whole winter? I'm also wondering if your schools are good, because I plan on having kids. Also, I hear alot of tourists come up over the summer, does that clog up your roads, where do most of the tourists come from and how do they treat you? Thank you.

Grand Marais is a pretty small town. It is a nice, well kept town. The times I have visited it has been busy but not overly so. We were staying in Lutsen last time I was in Grand Marais and it was 80° when we left Lutsen and 40° in Grand Marais, in July. The wind off the lake keeps the summer temps pretty cool too.

I suggest that you go there and visit the town several times and at different times of the year.

I'm just curious, but can you tell us why you would want to live there if you don't know much about it? I always find it fascinating to learn why people want to move places. I understand being moved for work/job/professional reasons, but (from the sounds of it) those aren't your reasons.

Default Lake Superior weather

Grand Marias is beautiful in both summer and winter. Lake Superior is large enough that the lake will moderate the local weather by quite a bit...it can be 50 degrees at the lake and 85 a few miles inland in the summer. Winter temps are warmer near the lake...but be assured that there will be snow from October til April and sometimes ice on some of the lakes into May...and winter time in a small North Woods town can be wonderful if you love to ski, snowmobile, hunt, fish etc but awful lonely if you do none of the above.

I love that town.We looked at property on the Gunflint Trail. If you go to check it out have dinner at the Angry Trout. We always just passed through on our way on canoe trips in the BWCA.One time we stopped and stayed and enjoyed our visit so much we try to stay there anytime we get that way. It's a pretty harbor town with tons to do if you like the outdoors.

I love Grand Marais. Tourist traffic seems to have grown by quite a bit though. Steak fry at the Blue Water Cafe is the best. Add your own salt and pepper. Cheap and basic, not spendy, trendy, and not tasty like some other places.
