According to that 2012 estimate, St. Paul was only 55% non-Hispanic whites; they numbered 160,000 out of a total of 290,000 people. It's 2014 now, so this percentage has likely gone down further.

Do you think that percentage has already fallen below 50%?

How long do you think it will be until whites become a minority in the metro? I think our predominantly German and Scandinavian brethren will fall into minority status sometime in the 2050s or 2060s.

Scandinavians have always been a minority in St. Paul. Most white people have German and Irish backgrounds.

Of course Scandinavians are a minority in St. Paul. But there are more Scandinavians than Irish in both the St. Paul and the metro as a whole.

The Scandinavian (Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish) population of the entire metro is nearly 800,000, almost twice as much as the 408,000 Irish. As for St. Paul, the Irish population is 34,000, but the Scandinavian population is nearly 43,000. The Irish are the third largest group of whites in St. Paul and the metro after Germans and Scandinavians.

City limits are arbitrary don't really matter. You have to look at the population of a metro area as a whole.

There are over 3 million people in the TC metro, 80% or so are white..it will be a while before they are the minority...if ever.

Hard to say. I think it will happen eventually, but it will take a few generations; probably longer here than elsewhere in the nation. Your timeline sounds right to me. It will also depend on how the terms are defined -- i.e. will the area considered the metro expand, is somebody who is multiracial considered white, and so on.

In city of St. Paul, it will take 15 years. White population is aging and younger people don't stay there. The only growth is vietnamese and hispanic families. Metro area as a whole will never become minority majority. Immigration to the area would have to spike and there is no reason to believe that it would.

Don't be so sure -- there is a lot of immigration to the suburbs going on right now. If it did happen, it wouldn't be for a while, but I don't think it can be entirely ruled out.

Non-Hispanic whites are 77.8% of the metro as of 2012, yes, but the vast majority of population growth in both Minnesota and the metro comes from minority groups, especially Hispanics. And the growing diversity is mainly occurring in the suburbs, not the core cities. Here's a link containing some info on increased suburban diversity.

In 2000, 1.8 million Twin Cities residents lived in predominantly white suburbs (defined as 80% white or higher), which was 62% of all Twin Cities residents. By 2010, the number decreased to less than 1.5 million, and the percentage of Twin Cities residents living in mostly white suburbs had dipped to 45% of the metro population, while the percentage for diverse suburbs increased from 5% in 2000 to 23% in 2010; the number increased from 144,000 to 754,000. I can see whites being a minority in the metro and probably the whole state sometime between 2050 and 2070, probably more towards 2060 or 2070. Whites are older and don't have as many children as minority groups do. It's pretty much a certainty that whites will become a minority in the metro and state if those circumstances stay in place.

St. Paul was only 55% white in 2012; I'm almost positive it will be less than 50% white by the 2020 census. The Twin Cities will probably become minority-majority some time after the whole nation has. Most estimates claim minorities will become the majority in the nation by 2042, so I'm thinking it's safe to say minorities will be the majority in the metro between 2050 and 2070. Since the Twin Cities has a higher percentage of whites than the nation as a whole, it will likely take longer for the metro to reach minority-majority status. While whites will no doubt be the largest group, they will no longer be over 50% of the population. It will happen eventually.
