Remember the Titanic Artifact Exhibition held at St. Paul's Union Depot back in 1999? A set of whistles from the ship were set up in front of the exhibit and blown, first time since 1912, before a crowd of 100.000 people.
I was the staff manager and historian at that exhibit-and am curious-What is being done with the Union Depot today? Someone told me it hasn't been used since the 99' Titanic exhibit. What a shame, its a gorgous building, and perfect for exhibitions.... If you attended the 99' Titanic exhibit, what did you think of it? |

I only vaguely remember the Titanic show, but it was very interesting.
Union Depot isn't used for rail traffic at this time. There was a LeeAnn Chin resturant in the concourse, and a few condos have been put into old office parts. It is seldom open. It is not decaying or abandoned and should see train traffic again within the decade. The Duluth rail line would likely terminate in Saint Paul. I assume the AMTRAK depot would relocate from The Midway when that occurs. It has certainly been used since you last saw it. |

I also recall a barbacue resturant on the concourse- I think it was called 'Big Daddy's', or something like that...It would be great if the Union Depot came back to life-it's truly a beautiful building.... |

I thought the Titanic exhibit was incredible and I'm so thrilled I had a chance to see it
. Now I wish someday it would come back so I could bring my kids... |

Last spring my husband and I had a chance to ride along with Ramsey County Council member Tony Bennett to where the planned route of the light rail line would go and an alternative route that Tony Bennett had suggested circling downtown St. Paul and providing better transportation for visitors.
Mr. Bennett stated that the front of the old Union Depot has been sold or leased for long term businesses; but that the back parts of the old depot would be connecting the light rail with the Amtrak with the high speed rail to Duluth and Chicago. |

I go there to LeAnn Chin's when I'm in town.

Union Depot is indeed a beautiful building. Last time I was there, there was a LeeAnn Chin's Asian restaurant (more upscale than the strip mall versions found all over the TC), and Christo's a Greek restaurant.
We went to the Titanic whistle blowing. It was predicted to be very loud, if it still blew. We decided to park over on Warner Rd, about 1/4 mile away, to listen. Never heard a thing! |
