Hi guys,

I would like to ask for an advice.

I have been abroad for 3.5 years. I was a full time student. I had been employed up to the summer 2010. And I left the country.

Now, I want to go home to Minnesota, but I have no job there and no family who can support me. I need to pay for rent, buy car, food.

Can I qualify for some unemployment benefits until I find any job there?

Thank you…

If you haven't been working here, then no, you wouldn't qualify for it. You may be able to qualify for other forms of financial assistance, but definitely not unemployment insurance.

think it may depend on where your last residency was and/or the nature of your employment. If one were to serve in the military after living in a state and were then discharged, they could get U.I. back in the state of previous residency. Not sure how thatwould or could apply to the "private sector" however.

Unemployment assistance is generally available to people who are actively at work and lose a job through no fault of their own.

The good news is that almost any can can qualify for EMPLOYMENT assistance by following these steps:

1. Go to local fast food restaurant, coffee shop, retail establishment etc.

2. Fill out application.

3. Get job.

4. Work.

5 Get paid.

6. Repeat steps 5&6 indefinitely.

Why should a state provide you with income when you have not payed any money to the state for 3.5 years?

I assume not, as that's not the intent of unemployment. But the job market here is good, and you should be able to find something quickly, even if just a temporary job to get some money coming in while you look for more permanent work.

Yes, there is a LOT of work available in rural Minnesota. I drive back and forth in the west central and southwest part of the state and see a lot of Help Wanted signs, and not just at fast food joints. There are small manufacturing concerns out in small towns and they seem always to be hiring.

Of course, they want people willing to work.

Target is hiring, chipotle is hiring... I could go on and on... As long as you can get a ticket over and pay up front for a few months rent... You won't need unemployment. Or join the military?

I find it interesting that you are inquiring about the U.I. picture instead the job possibilities.
