Moose lake is a small town of about 2,000 in southern Carlton county...very pretty area. It's less than an hour up I-35 to Duluth. They used to have a state mental hospital there but I think they turned it into a medium security prison about 10 years ago?

I have a shirttail cousin who lives in Moose Lake, and visited him a couple of times a few years back. Moose Lake impressed me as being very similar (e.g. very safe, maybe somewhat boring) to the small Minnesota towns I grew up in. Once you've been there a bit, folks are friendly. The main challenge for anyone moving in from outside the northern mid-west (read MN, ND, MT, WI, MI) is the winter weather. Unless you're willing to deal with LOTS of snow, and 2-3 weeks in which the high temperatures are well below zero, northern Minnesota is not the place for you. However, to offset this, the summer weather will hit the upper 90's. The town is in the middle of some very nice pine forests, and as someone said, is close to Duluth and not too far from Minneapolis/St. Paul. The people are good, the weather????

Well, I don't think we really get 2-3 weeks where the high temps are "well below zero". There are usually a few DAYS like that each year, but not 2 or 3 weeks. Two years ago they canceled school for a few days because the HIGH was like -20. But those super cold "arctic blast" snaps usually only last a few days, then it will "warm" back up to the single digits above zero, lol. Then we put our convertible tops back down and break out the sunscreen. Last winter was actually pretty mild by N. Minnesota standards...no "cold" cancellation days for school (at least not around here.)
But yes, the point is it can (and will) get butt cold here in the winter. No denying that.

living in Moose Lake
It is a nice mellow town. It is bigger then the surrounding towns like Barnum, Kettle River, Willow River and Sturgeon Lake. They now have the Moose Lake Correctional Facility there. The school is combined with Willow River. People are friendly, for a small town I like it. You will be 1 hour from Duluth and 1.5 hours to 2 hours from the cities. You have Hinkley and Carlton casinos if you are into that, .5 hrs away. It is small town life, you get to know your neighbors. I liked growing up there and I want to move back, I am ready for a slower paced life now.

I agree with what everyone said above. It is a very nice town...restaruants are very good as well...the Blue Bear Cafe, among others. Small, friendly, etc...your basic small town. Very nice.
Excuse my spelling...
