Anyone know much about this school? I've read mixed reviews online, but I'd like opinions from people who actually live in the area and may even know others who attend or have attended.

Not any different from St Cloud or Mankato. Not much to say. The Minnesota State Universities are all very good.

The only worry that I have isn't so much with the school itself as it is with the town that it is in. Many seem to find Marshall to be quite a boring place, and not very welcoming to new comers. This is based simply off several things that I have read online. I'm not from the area, so this does concern me a bit. Though, I am sure that living in Marshall and attending SMSU is different than just living in Marshall. I am hoping that being a college student will eliminate some of my worries of the boring town. What do you think?

Well, there isn't much in Marshall itself and outside of it. It's pretty isolated. Next closest "big places" would be Sioux Falls, Willmar, or Mankato.

Marshall is around 15,000 now, and Willmar is around 20,000. There isn't a whole lot of difference between the two except that Willmar has a Target and Marshall does not. As for colleges, Marshall has a state university whereas Willmar has some kind of community college. Having spent time in both cities, I would choose Marshall over Willmar for a university experience. Willmar has a higher crime rate.

2012 Stats - from City-Data
Burglary rate (per 100,000): Willmar 73, Marshall 124
Theft rate (per 100,000): Willmar 502, Marshall 270
Auto thefts (per 100,000): Willmar 18, Marshall 9
Assaults (per 100,000): Willmar 34, Marshall 25
Robberies (per 100,000): Willmar 8, Marshall 0

Now that Brau Brothers has their brew-pub open in Marshall, the city is ON THE MAP! There was a Hop Fest last month that attracted some bands for a 3-day weekend. The worst band was from the Twin Cities, so go figure. Big cities don't always have the best of everything.
