If you could give one tip about life in Minnesota to a new transplant (especially from some place warm), what would it be?

"Bring Warm Clothes." It's a book worth reading. Also "How to Talk Like a Minnesotan." I've given it to several transplants who have found it useful if perhaps a bit dated by now.

1) Don't worry about all the bear attacks - they've dropped off so much they're now only the 3rd-leading cause of death in the state.

2) Yes, eating lutefisk is mandatory.

3) Most years the lakes are free of ice by June, and we usually don't get our first hard freeze until sometime after August.

I wanted to say 'bring warm clothes' but that comment was already taken.

I guess my second piece of advice would be to learn to embrace winter. It's a long 5 months of crap. Learn to skate, ski, x-country ski, snowshoe, etc.

Also, keep good tires on your car. You'll need good traction in the snow!

Lots of layers -- you'll need clothes for everything from the heat and humidity of summer (at which time you'll still need layers, as some offices and businesses insist on keeping it COLD inside) to well below zero at the worst of winter.

Do some practice walking and driving during the first bout of icy streets and walks.

Making friends can be hard here. Find activities that will get you out and mingling.
