I guess they must be running out of places for their annual list.

Duluth was also named the top outdoors destination city in the United States by Outdoors Magazine in 2014. That one was determined by votes from the general public. Just wanted to remind people, that's all. Think there was a thread about it too. It is good for the city to be on two lists like this in a short time frame, albeit a 1st place ranking from Outdoors Magazine is definitely more notable and impressive than 9th place from Lonely Planet.

Duluth only topped the Outdoors list because there was a campaign on Facebook to inflate the votes on the poll they were using to create the rankings.

Everything was fair and square in the voting. There was no cheating. The fact that people enthusiastically embraced the city and used Facebook to do so is an even greater compliment to their pride in the city IMO and I would guess most others feel the same way. That was actually a smart move that should be praised. The irony is humorous that a city thought of by some as still "rust belt" actually used the modern technology better than some supposedly "up to date" modern cities. No rule prevented it.

There was nothing stopping anyone in another city from doing the same thing if they so chose. Furthermore, the margin of victory over 2nd place Provo was by over 10,000 votes. Provo residents and the other cities competing also have access to Facebook. They have no right to be bitter about the results. BTW, 2nd place is still pretty impressive considering the cities on that list.

Duluth, in addition to its natural beauty and recreation, has made progress as a city and got rewarded for it. It has nothing to be ashamed of regarding either the ranking from Outdoors Magazine decided by voters and the more recent one from Lonely Planet.

The Lonely Planet ranking is very nice to have, but Indianapolis and Oakland also are on the list. This could have been the year they picked some "under the radar" places (albeit still deserving) for their list.

Respectfully agree to disagree.

there's nothing to disagree about

I'm just saying the ranking was based on the number of votes from an internet poll.

"Poor Man's San Francisco" has always been one of my Top Ten travel destinations! A cable car up one of those steep streets would even bring more tourists to that wonderful city!
